They are correct: calico and tortoiseshell are a coat color, not a breed. Very different breeds can have a calico coat. Left is oriental shorthair, right is Persian.

I found this simple gem on reddit.
A flow chart that starts with the question: What breed is my cat? The first follow up question is "does it have papers from a breeder?". If the answer is yes, the conclusion is "it is what the those papers say it is". If the answer is "no" the conclusion is "It is a cat".

Very dark black and white photo of a shorthaired cat sitting on a table, backlit by a window in the near distance. It’s impossible to make out much, the darkness and high contrast just show you the form of the cat that is nearly in silhouette but you can make out just a few soft curves of its haunches and one foreleg. Very moody and evocative of film noir imagery.
