I guess what I'm getting at is I feel like a lot of these complaints are accurate but also sound like they're coming from people who never played most Mario Kart games when they were truly new? I feel like we had this same sort of discourse around Wii, 7 and 8 (Wii U version).

You're not wrong, but honestly this is generally how I've experienced Mario Kart compared to a lot of games in general. LIke MK has always been the fun racing game that everyone has that I want to have to come back to play every now and then, but rarely been my one-and-only obsession.

I kind of pictured Tsubasa as a squirrel, but maybe it's just her long hair making me think of a squirrel's tail, plus her having a bit of that Aoi gopher face when she's excited.
Darumi's definitely a dog though.

Not that that's what the creators were going for or that you can't argue that maybe someone is reading the wrong message from something, but I can also see why one wouldn't be as quick to give them the benefit of the doubt after seeing it in earnest so many times.

Having seen the clip I can definitely see it raising some red flags. You still see a LOT of comics online where the "joke" is "haha, look at how fat and ugly and hairy and annoying this person in a dress is, wouldn't it be funny if we called them a "creature" and said we should kill them?"

Doubly so when it's already designed in part to homage or imitate specific films or film genres but with interactivity, so when you take away the interactive part you're just left with a weird off-brand movie, especially when they also try to lean away from the more unique aspects of the game.

While I would say it's best as a companion piece to the game I do appreciate that it tries to strike a decent balance with working well enough as a standalone series while still adding enough new material to be a worthwhile watch for people who already played it.

Yeah, sadly we've already proven that Keighley hates strategy games, so one that's also a filthy visual novel sadly never stood a chance.
Nice to see them put some respect on Donkey Kong at least. Maybe this kiddy platformer will be the one to avenge Forgotten Land's cruel snubbing.

My brother actually checked out the original movie from the video store because he recognized it from the cartoon.

The best thing that can be said for it is that it does a LOT to improve one of the weakest characters from the first game. As for the rest of it, eh..........

You know what game I played that same year where I got softlocked on about three times yet never heard much guff about online? God of War: Ragnarok, a supposed GOTY contender. Mind you I was playing the PS4 version so maybe that's a factor, and it was obviously the more impressive game, but still.
