More of Cael being…Cael. Annora, trapped in a dystopian future, is desperate to right her father’s wrongs.

Fynn’s POV—
“The Facility currently possesses all of the element, so unless we can sneak in there and steal it, we’re kind of SOL.” Cael shrugs, shuffling some papers on the table. “So…let’s go steal some.” Cael howls with laughter. The scowl on Nora’s face makes me smile. She’s completely serious, and Cael thinks she’s pulling his leg. “You’re hilarious,” he chokes out, wiping back tears. “Robo dogs…remember? No way we’re getting in and out of there with our brains intact. And the world would definitely miss this brain.” He taps his temple, a smirk on his face. “It could work,” Nora argues, picking up one of the device designs lying on the table. “If we could just figure out how Fynn’s dad created that power surge, and used your devices to incapacitate everyone, we could, potentially, locate the element and go back in time to destroy the original source.” “But Nor, the original source…” I don’t think she realizes it’s— “I know, Fynn,” she snaps. “We should probably try to get some work done,” I mutter, pulling up some data on my computer. Cael rolls his eyes, nudging Nora, explaining his device and showing her various pages of data and design. My eyes drift their way every so often. Several times hers are already on me, but she quickly averts her gaze. We continue like that for the remainder of the afternoon: me getting absolutely nothing done, and Cael and Nora working to refine his device. Cael asks Nora all about high school at Bowen and what it was like growing up in Nebraska. I zone out while she tells him stories of our crazy escapades, but come back when her hand gently grips mine below the table. Suddenly, there’s a buzz in the air. Something has happened.

A little text exchange after Will asked Maggie to try long distance and she told him they’d never work.
Maggie: Officially on the couch demolishing a crème brûlée. Is this rock bottom? Will: Date was that bad huh? Maggie: Well it was mostly your fault. Delete. Well I was distracted by someone. Delete. I miss you. Delete. Obviously. Can you fly over and help me eat this? A picture loaded in response. Maggie howled with laughter, choking on a mouthful of dessert at the sight of Will in an apron, his mother trying to teach him how to make cookies. The look on his face… Maggie: Elias might have a future in photography. And with your mom’s help, you might be ready for the school bake sale. Will: It’s his birthday in a few weeks, and he wants to bring them for preschool. Practicing so I don’t poison any of the kids. He asked for a Maggie original, but I told him the birds flying it here would probably eat all of it. A heaviness settled in her chest, vision blurring, and she slumped down further into the couch cushions. She couldn’t just up and leave. Sniffing once, she wiped at her nose before replying. Maggie: Tell him I wish I could.

Cael might be the jokester of the group, but he’s also one heck of an engineer.

Fynn’s POV—
I don’t blame the woman, Nora’s clothes hang so loosely on her petite frame, it’s like she borrowed them from a giant. She’s going to need the extra fuel to build up her strength—not that I plan on letting her fight. When this is all over, it might kill me, but I’ll help her go back. If that’s what she wants. But I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t hoping she’d choose to stay here with me. “Ah. Nevermind. Your girl’s here I see.” Cael gives me a look, practically shoveling the rice into his mouth. “Sorry, what did you say? It’s hard to decipher between the sounds you make when you eat and actual conversation.” “Oh pardon me.” He snorts, dabbing his napkin ceremonially at the corners of his mouth like he has some semblance of manners. “I said, how did our girl do at training today? I figured you were watching her like a hawk, so…” “Our girl?” “Yeah, I have a feeling Annora and I are going to be besties. She actually laughs at my jokes, unlike some people I know.” Exhaling loudly, I sigh, running a hand through my hair. Cael was my first friend, after Zane and I… And I know he’d never try to take Nora from me, but jealousy threatens to bubble over when she sits down next to him, directly in front of me. The ridiculous grin on his face tells me he knows I’m pissed, and he’s here for it. “There she is! First training session, and lookie here” —He gently grips her chin, turning her face both to the right and the left as he inspects it— “she’s fully intact. Not even a scratch!” Glaring, I grip the table, white-knuckled, until he finally stops touching her. He smirks when she laughs, shaking her head as a pink blush tints her cheeks. He may be my best friend, but this idiot is looking to face me first on the training mat tomorrow. Maybe a few punches will wipe that smug look off his face.

Nora’s first day of training. She’s still pissed at Fynn for lying to her, but he’s just over the moon that she’s there, with him.

Fynn’s POV—
It’s all I can do to stay rooted in place when she goes to the ground, even though I know Jackie won’t seriously hurt her. I take one step in her direction, but the firm shake of her head is enough to freeze me mid-step. She’s stronger than I give her credit for, but the need to protect her might be stronger. My side aches like a son of a gun, the bruise already forming from Liam’s strike. She’s a distraction. When she’s in the room, I can’t focus, my eyes constantly searching for her. I’m sure Cael will give me crap for it later. It’s been awhile since someone got a decent hit on me. I don’t intervene, but stay close, keeping an eye on her as Jackie shows her how to stand, how to use her core for more power. Jealousy and want burns through me. It should be my hands on her. And it’s my own damn fault that it’s not. Sweat drips from the wisps of hair that escape her braid—her shirt soaked through. It’s tempting to tease her since I know how much she hates cardio. I’m not sure what Jackie says to her as she wipes the moisture from her brow, but she smiles one of those rare Nora smiles, and it hits me like a punch to the chest. Suddenly her eyes meet mine, the smile softening a bit. Her cheeks are red from exertion, almost the color of her fiery hair. She stares at the ground when I make my way toward her—unable to stay away any longer. “My turn.”
