Here’s a nerdy one. Harrison Birtwistle is writing Earth Dances. He hears that a fellow composer has died. The frenetic activity stops short for a mournful downward glissando, and then recommences. It’s a great moment in a great piece but I’m sure hardly anyone realises why it’s there…
