Why?
Spatial analysis shows highest degradation in the intermediate levels of accessibility in less connected structures. This could be due to reduce competition and enhance collaboration, or facilitation of spatial organization regulated by mechanisms like quorum sensing.

What did we find?
Channels and mazes with lower level of connectivity showed the highest substrate degradation. This occurred for the two types of structures tested: channels, and mazes.

How?
We inoculated a soil bacterial inoculum into microfluidic chips containing either channels or mazes of various levels of connectivity. Chips were filled with nutrient medium and a fluorogenic substrate to track peptidase activity.

We observed that the sole connectivity of a microhabitat can determine the function (substrate degradation) of a soil community. How? (1/5)👇
