A herd of mule deer passing through one’s property on their annual migration to summer or winter range is A LOT less destructive than a group of cattle camped out on your grass,crapping on patios and driveways, stepping on drain fields,gardens,rubbing against windows,drinking fountains dry…

Yes!Open Range areas that are now heavily residential are a problem.Cattle “ escape” from Nat’l Forest grazing allotments on to private property.It’s the landowner’s responsibility to fence them out.Lots of fencing on small parcels.No wonder mule deer,a migratory species, is declining.

Not just BLM employees. Nat’l Forest rangeland employees too.Contracts that benefit the rancher and make it harder for private landowners to protect their land from wandering cattle.No enforcement for violations.Open Range laws.Cattle degrade public lands if not moved frequently,no water provided.

It takes effort to determine how ethical a business is. Guidelines for supporting a business in addition to buying from locally owned, non-corporate.Look for membership in:Fair Labor Association,Fair Trade,1% For The Planet,etc.Other metrics:paying employees a living wage,sustainability in products.
