Well, I do appreciate a game that lets me shoot fascists.

50. Nine Sols

And at 50 it's NINE SOLS! I'm ending on a high, Red Candle's masterpiece, I cannot recommend it highly enough, the Sekiro inspired combat is immensely good, the bosses are some of the best I've seen, it's hitting on Hollow Knight level of good, and the story and writing are top tier.

Enemies have a tendency to blur into the background if they aren't given strong outlines, for me at least.

Except the sewer. E1M3 is better but still not good. The rest are great though and it escalates the challenge very well. And has fan made maps or time trials if you wanted some replayability.

Both are more Wolfenstein 3D throwbacks? You have a singular plane for the most part, needing special elevators or plane transitions to change planes. Project Warlock has a fun upgrade system that lets you do different things on successive playthroughs, while Wizordum just has great level design.

Cultic, like mentioned.
Amid Evil, Wizordum, Project Warlock (Mostly being the first one I really played, I realize it's not amazing but it feels nice to play), Nightmare Reaper

I have problems with GZdoom game where everything turns into an unreadable blur to my eyes, why Selaco is not there.

True, true. Those are good, though it feels like it's very subjective since that's not my top 5 at all.
December 12, 2025 at 1:46 AM
Think Cultic is the best throwback shooters there is right now, honestly.

38. Cultic

They just came out with Chapter 2, so get on this. It is one of the best retro FPS titles by far, it's steeped in 80's horror movie sensibilities, it's bloody and brutal, and there's a crunchy grodiness to the visuals that add this grindhouse feel to it. And my god, that soundtrack!

34. Felvidek

Drunken knight Pavol bumbles into an absolutely wild conspiracy in what I can only describe as Monty Python's Berserk, it's a great little RPGMaker gem filled with amazing characters, the humour is just wonderful, and the music is... Oh you gotta hear it!

33. Conscript

I don't think this one gets as much praise as it deserves, a gruelling Survival Horror set in the trenches of WWI, and aschews the supernatural for the very real and tangible horrors of war, it's got that sort of top down oblique perspective like Signalis. Real god damn good.

23. The Séance of Blake Manor

Trust me on this, the game is positively genius. It's a detective game steeped in Irish history and mythology, and it is one of the most curious and fascinating games I've perhaps ever had the pleasure of playing. Might be up there with Obra Dinn, it's that good.

14. Captain Wayne

Still gotta finish this one, but picked up Captain Wayne on a whim the other week, and had a blast with it so far. You play a pirate captain with a shotgun arm, it's got an aesthetic I can only describe as MS Paint One Piece, which is glorious! Fun game, must return to it.
