The final day, day 26 of #birdtober is the Zitting Cisticola! It is not endangered as of now and hopefully stays that way, I just couldnt find another bird in India whose name began with Z. Anyway it's nice to end it on a good note 🪶

Day 25 of #birdtober is a Yellow-breasted Bunting!
They used to be in the Least Concern category right uptil 2004 but suffered a great deal from hunting and trapping especially in China.

Day 24 of #birdtober is supposed to be a bird with X in the name but since I couldnt find any for the list, I picked one that has sadly gone extinct. The Pink-headed Duck last had a confirmed sighting in 1935 with off and on reports until the 1960s.

Day 23 of #birdtober is the White-bellied Heron!
Very endangered, estimated to be less than 250 left, as it's habitat of undisturbed wetlands and rivers in the foothills of the Eastern Himalayas are under threat

Day 22 of #birdtober is the White-Rumped Vulture! There really are a lot of vultures on this list. Which is wild because in the 1980's there were several millions of them but by 2021 the estimate was less than 6000 individuals.

Day 21 of #birdtober is the Ultramarine Fyycatcher! It's not on the IUCN red list, I just couldnt find any bird starting with U for the series. But look at this pretty blue bird, it winters in the northern part of India.

Day 20 of #birdtober is the Tawny Eagle!
It prefers dry habitats, but loss of nesting grounds due to logging and global warming have seen it's numbers decline.

Day 19 of #birdtober is the Spoon-billed Sandpiper! They usually live around the Bering Sea but winter along the coasts of the southern parts of Asia. A lot of their habitat and migration points have been destroyed by reclamation.

Day 18 of #birdtober is the Red-headed vulture! Also called the Asian King Vulture or Indian Black Vulture. Its population also declined because of pharmaceuticals used to treat cattle but they are slowly making a recovery following the drug's ban.

Day 17 of #birdtober is the Himalayan Quail. It's unfortunately likely to be extinct as it has not been seen since 1876.
The habitat that it used to inhabit has also greatly changed since then.

Day 16 of #birdtober is the Pale-capped Pigeon! Also known as the purple wood pigeon, its a frugivore that spends a lot of time just ...sitting still in the tree foliage. Goals tbh.

Day 15 of #birdtober is the Nicobar Scops-Owl!
It's IUCN status is near threatened now, but I chose to include it here because it is endemic to the Nicobar islands and its habitat is being threatened by the Great Nicobar Island Development Project.

Day 14 of #birdtober is the Narcondam Hornbill! It's only found on one island in the Andamans called Narcondam. The island has recently seen human presence which poses a threat to this beautiful bird.

Day 13 of #birdtober ( halfway there in the alphabet ) is the Manipur Bush Quail. Exceedingly rare, it's found in North East India and Bangladesh. I couldn't even find any numbers for it.

Day 12 of #birdtober! There were (unfortunately) many candidates for L but I picked the Long-Tailed Parakeet.
It can be found in the Andaman and Nicobar islands (as well as parts of South East Asia)
Threatened by logging and illegal pet trade

Day 11 of #birdtober is the tiny Kashmir Flycatcher!. It spends summer in north India and then goes to the south and Sri Lanka for winter. Threatened again by habitat loss.

Day 10 (wow double digits) of #birdtober is the Jerdon's Courser!
Recorded first in 1848, it then disappeared until its rediscovery in the late 1980's. Last sighting of it was in 2004. BUT someone recorded their call in August of this year! There's hope!

Day 9 of #birdtober is the Indian Vulture!

They were on the brink of extinction because of the use of painkillers in cattle, which caused the birds kidney failure. But the drug has since been banned so their population is now recovering slowly

Day 8 of #birdtober is the (Great) Hornbill!
Another pretty large bird which is very incredibly distinctive. Its the state bird of two states, Kerala and Arunachal Pradesh!

Day 7 of #Birdtober is the Great Indian Bustard!
One of the heaviest flying birds, clocking in at between 15 - 18 kg , they are also very rare with maybe 150 individuals still alive today :/

October 7, 2025 at 4:45 PM
Day 6 of #birdtober is a Forest Owlet!
There are less than a 1000 individuals left in the wild ( as per a 2018 survey )
Threatened mostly by deforestation
