Kearny Generals football enjoys historic seasons
As the head coach of the Kearny Generals Pee-Wee (8-9 year olds) and Junior (fifth and sixth grade) football teams for the past three seasons Omar Ruiz-Martinez has seen firsthand the steady progress and improvement that has occurred since the program was revived in 2023. “We really saw the progress from the first year,” said Ruiz-Martinez, who played for the Kearny Generals growing up before playing basketball and football at Kearny High School. “We always knew the progression was going to be there. What really killed us the first year was the lack of experience.

This past February, the North Arlington girls bowling team made history when it won its first ever sectional title. Now, as the Vikings return to the lanes for a new season, the fun that comes with success has carried over. “That’s what we’re preaching. That it’s awesome to win and they also have a lot of fun doing it,” head coach Paul Marcantuono said. “I think they have a lot of fun and they really enjoy the sport and each other’s company. Winning a state sectional championship was awesome. I think they bonded with that.

With one of the most explosive offenses in the state, it never felt like Harrison was ever out of a game, even if it found itself trailing late. After seemingly finding a way to overcome any and all challenges thrown its way, Friday night’s North 2, Group 2 final presented one the Blue Tide were unable to conquer. Facing a Madison team ranked No. 8 in the state, Harrison was unable to crack a stellar Dodgers defense as Madison scored two second half goals to earn a 3-1 victory and end Harrison’s season with a 20-4-1 record.

Roslyn Almodovar sets Belleville scoring record in final game
Roslyn Almodovar’s record chase came down to one final kick, a 35-plus yard free kick late in her last high school girls soccer game. As Almodovar lined up for the kick, her ankle still hurting from an injury suffered earlier in the month, she was unsure if she had the strength to put the shot on net. It turned out Belleville’s star midfielder had one last bit of brilliance in her high school career. The right-footed shot sailed beyond the reach of the goalkeeper and under the crossbar to give Almodovar her 67th career goal.

Forgive Harrison head coach Mike Rusek Jr. for feeling exhausted after the first week of the state tournament. That’s because Friday night’s North 2, Group 2 quarterfinal against Mendham was the type of game a coach won’t forget. It took 80 minutes of regulation, a pair of scoreless overtime periods and then penalty kicks before the Blue Tide ensured their season would continue on as it outlasted Mendham squad in PKs by a 4-3 margin. Next up for Harrison on Tuesday afternoon is another daunting challenge in Voorhees, the reigning Hunterdon/Warren/Sussex Tournament champions, who earned an impressive 3-0 victory over Lyndhurst in the quarterfinals.

So honestly, going into groups, I had no real expectations other than beating my original time at Holmdel.” An afterthought a few days ago became reality as Ranges exceeded her high expectations by running a 19:50.
