This year, remembrance weighs even heavier. Just this week, the Alberta government took steps to attack the rights and dignity of trans and gender-diverse people, on the eve of a day meant to mourn the very violence that trans people already face.

They deserve a system that provides adequate treatment, ensures their wellbeing, and respects their dignity. A system that does not undermines the principles embodied in the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

The CCLA calls on Correctional Services Canada and the federal government to meaningfully take action in response to the OCI’s comprehensive recommendations. Individuals with mental health conditions in federal custody are some of the most vulnerable members of our society.

The OCI’s conclusion that it is “abundantly clear that CSC is fundamentally ill-equipped to provide long-term mental health care to individuals with serious mental illness” requires urgent attention and action.
