Halogen bulbs are more efficient than "Edison" bulbs (though they both have filaments), but are nowhere nearly as efficient as LEDs. And LEDs are available in a variety of color temperatures... And, halogens get ridiculously hot.

The ones with halogen bulbs and slabs of glass that would explode? They also tended to start fires. Metal dome-shaped grids were passed out to reduce the fire risk. I replaced the halogen crap with normal sockets and have LED bulbs in there now. [And a lampshade.]

Well, not quite 400:

I guess Calvin Trillin's campaign to make Spaghetti Carbonara the traditional dish has problems, too - what with the connection with Columbus.
How Did Thanksgiving Become Thanksgiving?
A writer and abolitionist from New Hampshire, Sarah Josepha Hale was a key figure for many of the Thanksgiving traditions we celebrate today. Her 1852 novel Northwood, a Tale of New England, descri…

11%??? In the states where Enron conned people into deregulating electricity generation and distribution, rates have gone up 500%.

Commuter rail west of Boston takes about twice as long as driving. They are improving the tracks, but it's still kind-of slow. Lots of grade crossings. There's a drawbridge just before North Station (Boston) over a little water channel...

My point is, why not make mass transit more attractive instead of making driving more unpleasant? [Massholes already make driving pretty unpleasant for people who know how to drive.]

As the natives always say when you point out how incompetently something in MA was done, "It's getting better."
November 23, 2025 at 12:02 AM
... the Calvanist strategy - which is to make it horrible to drive through the residential area. There are public roads near I-95/MA-128 with speed bumps! Now, they're putting tiny roundabouts every where - roundabouts that are too small for trucks to navigate without driving over the centers...

I've compared what New York State and Massachusetts do to encourage people to do what is considered beneficial. For example, when New York wants people to stop driving through a, say, residential area, they build a nicer road that goes around. Massachusetts, on the other hand, does what I call

Ivan Illich (I think) once did a (tongue-in-cheek) analysis of how much time is involved with owning a car. If you include that time, it turns out that you're traveling at about 3 mph.

Mass transit systems do offer monthly passes...

[I have a DVD with somebody mentioning the Kuder occupational interest survey that appears in the captions as "Cooder". -And, those were done by a human.]

Are you talking about being able to access the captions on the disc? All of the DVD/BD players (and recorders) I've ever owned have had that. You can access it through the disc's menu or through one of the poorly-identified buttons on the remote. Or, are you talking about the device generating,,,

There are probably lots of Mass. drivers with misaligned headlights through no fault of their own. Just the state's incompetent method of aligning headlights. [I had wanted to buy some of those big plastic aligners. Not needed for modern cars, which have built-in aligners.]
November 22, 2025 at 1:36 AM
Of, course, Mass. inspection stations do all alignments with the hokey method of using the fuzzy pattern of light on a board painted with lines. [I remember 1960s sealed beam headlight boxes showing how to do this as a DIY method for people who couldn't afford a professional aligner.]
November 22, 2025 at 1:33 AM
Back when cars had sealed-beam headlights, civilized states used those suction cup gizmos with levels and sight gizmos to align headlights. [Modern cars, which have screwy shapes which prevent those gizmos from being used have the sights and levels built-into the car. -Built-in aligners.]

...weight, height, weight. Of course, Mass. makes no such distinction, and says built-up areas vs. rural areas determines if bikes are allowed on sidewalks. Completely irrational.
November 22, 2025 at 1:28 AM
And, re bicycles on sidewalks. Most states distinguish between little kids on plastic bikes vs. big kids/adults on real bikes. Former are no threat to pedestrians and would be at risk in the street. Latter would maim/kill pedestrians and are fine in the road. So, most states distinguish by rider

Workaround in Mass. is police with ridiculously bright lights, which blind all other drivers near a traffic stop.
