Have long loved Benjamin Zephaniah and I've reading his poems to my daughter for quite some time.

To hear his words from the mouth of a UK politician gives me real hope.

Yes, you!

Please and thank you.

Great piece from @chrisgiles.ft.com - in this week of ThatcherFest, you could argue that the attack on the welfare system was a key part of Thatcherism. As Denis once recalled, she could never understand why someone would be paid not to work. #EconSky open.spotify.com/episode/0ELM...

There is no need for a moral panic about the UK's welfare system.

Far from perfect but recent discourse is nuts

Spending is controlled, not spiralling

Worklessness is near record lows

Also, focusing on a group of (extremely disagreeable) people allows for the - deliberate or otherwise - ignorance of the real issue: no Israeli teams should be permitted to play during an ongoing genocide.

There’s no debate about banning Russian fans or not; we banned their country
These hooligans aren’t banned because they are Israeli or because they are Jewish

They are banned because they have a long history of violent disorder and racist, misogynistic and paedophilic genocide support

Which bit of this is hard? @barneyronay.bsky.social

Ban on Maccabi Tel Aviv fans is a terrible decision – and a depressing one | Barney Ronay
The idea that barring the Israeli club’s supporters from Villa Park will de-escalate a volatile situation just doesn’t stand up
