Mississippi Supreme Court runoff, COMPLETE election day + absentee vote totals in HINDS COUNTY. These numbers are lackluster for incumbent Jim Kitchens. Challenger Jenifer Branning is in a very good position to hold her lead.

This is not great for Kitchens. Explanation below.

Branning has a fairly punitive voting record on crime issues, but it would take a bit to see how that translates to her jurisprudence.

During his campaign, he told The Marshall Project that more work is needed to improve public defense in Mississippi.

However, Kitchens didn't see a way for the state Supreme Court to proactively enforce compliance with its own rules.

Testifying before a legislative committee later that year, Kitchens acknowledged this problem.

Legal observers and even sitting state officials have for decades described Mississippi as having one of the country's worst public defense systems.
