South Dakota ranchers are successfully using prescribed burns to manage their grasslands by killing encroaching Eastern red cedars and allowing prairie to thrive. Great read on their efforts and collaborations for effective grassland management.

A journal has retracted an article from 2000 that has been cited often in assessments of the safety of glyphosate, the active ingredient in RoundUp herbicide. US EPA is due to update its assessment of glyphosate in 2026.

Check out “Flowers for Vera” in CNPS's fall issue of Flora. The 12-acres that make up Vera’s Sanctuary, a residential rehab program for survivors of sex trafficking, was converted to native plants. The final garden was completed in March 2025. Read more: bit.ly/3LFLq0Y

Amazing work by the Sugar Pine Foundation to preserve pine trees around Lake Tahoe currently threatened by invasive white pine blister rust. The Foundation finds resistant trees, grows their seeds, and plants them back out to improve forest resilience. Learn more at sugarpinefoundation.org/.

Shout out to the Ventura Land Trust as they protect, restore, and connect the community to nearly 4,000 acres in Ventura County! Their small but mighty team manages invasive species, converts trail edges to native habitat, and surveys for EDRR species.

Research shows that cheatgrass affects mule deer habitat selection in Wyoming, and it’s no surprise that they prefer native sagebrush to cheatgrass. Strategic management can help mule deer to persist in areas threatened by invasive grasses!
