Let's talk about SCAMS, because lately, they've been squatting on my doorstep. Especially as a creative because scammers scroll 4chan/reddit/socials. . Scammers know that crewtives are foaming at the mouth to work. And I get it, dawg. You Wanna do your passion and not get a 9 to 5. . Let me hold your sticky hands with a napkin, baby. If it's too good to be true, it's not true. See the picture above? See how vague it is? I call it the 'Hostess Hustle'. . What is the 'Hostess Hustle'? I've you been to any major Japanese city at night, you know that the women and clean cut men on the street bark to get you in their clubs. If you're ignorant to the scam, you go in, have some fun and then you have to pay this GINORMOUS bill. If you don't, yakuza are waiting for you. . This scam is the same thing. They always use a female character to eaen your trust. Then it goes down one of two ways; they try to extort money from you online as part as an engineering fee that you 'split' OR they get you to a physical place, give you a dummy script and then lock you in until you pay something crazy. Either way it's extortion. . Did I go through this? No, but I know people who have and they all hold one common denominator: they were desperate to work. . So, Loves, let's be real. Even SAG is finding it hard to scrape up work. We are in a transition phase. Always be skeptical. TLDR: How Chuds steal your work. . This is an educational moment about voice work and how one in the craft has to fight their ego for internet clout and think long term for their career. The above young man is quite good at Warhammer Epic; and that is a problem. He's very good and he's doing a lot of it on his page...which draws 'licensing squatters' . Here is what will happen. . 1. They will go through all of his posts and use an internet ripper to take his samples. . 2. They will take all the samples and go to an AI website like 11 Labs, create a fake profile, and feed his voice samples into it. . 3. They will license his voice, post it on the site, and let people download it for a fee. The Chud will make residual income from the stolen work, and it's nothing the young man can do about it. . So, what can you do if you are a voice actor? You have to advertise! . Simple: Keep your samples small (under a minute) and do not show your face while you act. Headshots, okay. Some random pics are fine, but do not have a video of you acting while in front of a mic. I know that seems counterintuitive, but the more you give the chuds, the more they can take to build your likeness. It is not 100 percent, but the whole point is NOT TO MAKE IT EASY TO STEAL FROM YOU. . If you decide to do it the old-fashioned way, go to those AI sites and license your own voice first. Beat them to the punch, but keep in mind those sites only give you 10% of sales. That's right. 10%...and it's not forever either. . Welcome to the world of AI, my love. I turned down VO work today. . I know the rebuttal all to well: 'JC, you are freelance. You spent a year not working and now you are turning down work? Unbelievable.' . And yet I did. . The picture above you? All of it, down to the voice acting, is AI. I was asked to perform the part of said woman in the far right corner. I didn't turn it down because of AI... . I turned it down because of the product and the portrayal of women. . The company was pushing this weirdo innocent looking puzzle game with GAMBLING under the hood. You play the game, add some stakes, and get paid back in make up, shopping sprees and home decor in the form of game specific crypto. . Yes. Crypto. . The climax of the commercial was two women in a full on cat fight over a bonus spin. Screaming. Hair pulling. Tackling. In the restaurant. In public. The winner got a massive shopping spree. . The spectacle turned my guts. . The director needed my talents since the AI voice could not enunciate most of the script. She didn't sound real. I knew what that meant. I refused. . Level with me, Chaps. I know I'm old and I'm not hip on Tik Tok and such, but, despite my crass opinions and my obnoxious love of dirty smut, I have honor towards my creative brethren and to women; even if some women wouldn't show me the same. . The world is becoming this strange ass casino, but I won't go in. What is the saying when playing the Old Heads in Dominoes? . "Not all money is Good Money." . I beg...no, I plead on a constant basis for new VO artists as well as established ones: . NEVER AUDITION without contractual clauses that the producers will NOT USE YOUR VOICE for any purposes and will DELETE all recordings if/if not you are chosen. If you are an online personality, NEVER USE YOUR MONRY MAKING VOICE while recording or streaming. AI will scrub whatever it can, so make it harder for the platform. Make them dingy asses work for your time. . Last, if you see a gig that is 20 to 50 dollars an hour, NEVER TAKE IT. It is a company gathering VO for whatever data banks they can pawn you off to whatever company that will pay for it. Note: they will not pay you. . My stance is simple: I did some VO work for an AI company years ago before it was vogue/infamous. As a nerd, I thought I was helping technology. Sadly, I realized that what the Tech Bro dudes were pulling was getting my voice for cheap... . But here's where I screwed them. I didn't use my money-making voice... and since how I normally talk versus what I am paid for differs drastically, they couldn't replicate the data without it sounding weird. . Look, if you're reading this...I know you want to work, but don't be so eager to toss your labor away to a bunch of tech dudes who would rather steal than pay you. . Yes, I said stealing. I never charge by anything less when working gig sites. . My current rate is 250 words/100 USD non-negotiable unless I like the project and it will not take much time. Audiobooks are the same rate, but with a percentage discount and an adequate time frame. I put this on my gig pages so I don't get offers like these. . I've finished 10 books this way.
