In terms of how, the mechanism via which IPA relates to violent extremism is exposure, where men who perpetrate IPA actively seek out and inadvertently come into contact with people, places, or settings, both online and offline, which share their worldview, including their attitudes towards women.

We found that men who had perpetrated intimate partner abuse scored higher on measures of susceptibility to violent extremism. In terms of why, our results suggest the overlap is rooted in the underlying gendered attitudes towards violence against women which can underpin both types of violence.
