Despite there being no seas here, you can see a gull this time of year in the Duke City! These numbers would have been unheard of in the late 19th century due to hunting, but they are now estimated to be the 3rd most populous bird worldwide at approximately 1.2 billon birds!

Gluten-Free? Remember to check labels when grocery shopping and inform your server when dining out. Wheat allergies (one of the big nine allergens!) is just one gluten-related condition to keep in mind this #NationalGlutenFreeDay.

Unlike the vast majority of adult butterflies that seem to dance from flower to flower, Arizona Sisters prefer the less glamorous hangouts of mud, tree sap, rotting fruit and even carrion in search of a meal, making them one of the few species of adult butterflies that aren’t actually pollinators!

As we get ready to walk into the #NewYear, many people have a tradition walking around the neighborhood to reflect. One of the most abundant number of feet you’ll find anywhere in the city is on the Desert Millipede.

While many of us are excited to wake up tomorrow to find if #Santa and his #reindeer visited tonight, Santa’s reindeer are the only reindeer that can be found in the Duke City. We do, however, have their cousins as one of our wild citizens living with us every day—the Mule Deer!

We know the holiday tradition of leaving milk and cookies out on Christmas eve (tomorrow), and we do love that combo too! 🥛🍪 Just remember, dairy is a high-risk food, so keep an eye on how long it sits out and keep everyone safe. 🎅

##DYK? Multiple historic versions of “The Twelve Days of Christmas” have “hares-a-running” in the song. Albuquerque is home to a singular hare species—the Black Tailed Jackrabbit (aka American Desert Hare), it is highly adapted to life desert life and our hot summers.

The modern version of the #12Days talks about being gifted “Four Calling Birds”, many of the historical versions refer to these four birds as “colly” or “collie” birds. One of our most prominent ‘colly’ birds in the city is the Great-tailed Grackle, who can be quite noisy too!

The First Day of Christmas, the caroler was given a partridge in a pear tree. The Duke City is not home to any partridge, but it is home to their very close relatives—quail. Gambel’s Quail is Albuquerque’s most common quail.
