A few plays of many games!

I wanted to share the last two weeks instead of one because what a variety I’ve had! Not a lot of games overall, but new baby and back to work makes that expected. I hope to end this month by playing a ton this week since I’m home with the kiddos.

It’s unfortunate that my darling wife, after a grueling back and forth match of Crisps, ended the fifth and final round by enabling me to play…

So if a domino game that plays like a modern board game and a traditional one at the same time, I hope you’ll try it, and maybe even share it with someone else! :)

This all started with Floristry. Back in May, this game consumed my waking mind. My wife loved playing with it, my daughter loved losing to us (because she’s crazy impulsive with her money), and it’s just an incredibly solid game. But it got my gears turning really fiercely.

I really enjoyed making and refining Even At Odds, and I want to talk about the process I went through because it is very full of reminiscing on my friends.

2/3 Done! Yap is a 2-4 player discard and draw game with climbing/shedding elements thrown in. My daughter and I worked on it pretty intensely in July. It’s up on BGG now if you want to try it! boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/45...

Okay, one more thing because it makes me giggle. Each card is 1:1 with a domino. For the tiles with blank sides, I have a faint turtle hiding in the depths. The true comedy, for only me tbh, is that the transparency of the turtle is 50%. Only on its actual card is it 100% because 50+50, lol.

One thing that hurts the playability of Sevens is that adding pips together in your head is kind of hard. The cards in Microfishing simply show the sums, and having each "species" of fish correlate to a pip-value on a domino. My wife drew some great art because I said "draw some fish in 'my' style."

Microfishing is a 2-player fishing game based on Escoba where you'll play cards from hand to capture fish from the Lake (the table). As long as the played card and the Lake card(s) add to 18, you'll capture them! Rules and a print-ready PDF are linked below.

Man. I started good but I stopped counting and got off. I think it’ll never lay flat, which is kind of a problem for a game board. Time to try again.

Out of context, I might be doing some Sumerian enchantments. In context, this triangle is *clean*. I’m ready to do the real one I think.

Oh yeah… it’s all coming together.

I went back to using mosaic as I should’ve done from the start. Immediately better results. I know this looks incomprehensible, but trust me, it’s progress. I usually do a stumpy work piece like this to future out the exact stitches and then I’ll mark up the pattern.

The empty triangles are *not* doing what I want… so back to the drawing board for a minute.

Here's how the pattern gets made. I wind up making most things on grid paper first so I can quickly adjust things. Then I make the pattern in stitchfiddle (the easiest way to get crochet charts made online), and test various hook sizes to estimate the size and quantity of yarn needed.

Matt kindly shared the Pantone color with me, which let me get the most accurate hex code I could. From there, I used ol’ reliable temperature-blanket.com to find yarn by hex, filtering for the brands I know I could find in store in my city. After filtering weights, I’m landing on “Pumpkin” haha.

I’m also going to add to this thread as I go and actually accomplish each step along the way. To begin, here’s the board for Rowin. Needing exactly two colors makes this *perfect* for my favorite style: mosaic overlay. Once I finish my grid, I’ll put it here.
November 4, 2025 at 3:24 PM
With the blessing of @aveknots.bsky.social to recreate the board from his upcoming IGNM release Rowin in crochet, I decided to show the process I typically use when doing things like this. This is mostly because I’m just absolutely enamored with the graphic design choices, especially the colors.🧵

I got a few new games this month, but I think the new player I’ve added to my group is the best.

My October games. For this month to be so much for me personally, I got a good variety of stuff played!
November 1, 2025 at 3:07 AM
Surprised I didn’t have as many plays as I thought. Oh well! Interesting week regardless.
