Gone are the days of just getting a new beam weapon. Now you find “chips” and have to bring them back to a, so far, completely superfluous NPC to turn them into a weapon.

After you unlock the sol desert, a vapid space with green rocks to collect and a few random structures with upgrades, you are told to explore the area looking for keys, and to “check them out in any order” except 2 of three are dead ends, so just pretend you can do them in any order.

After loosing all your upgrades, like you do in every game, you are given the psychic beam, it has the same power as the normal arm beam but can open psychic doors… which haven’t shown up until after you get it. (So it does nothing)

...but the bosses were the same creepy robot called Doc Robot and he would take on the abilities of the Robots Masters from Mega Man 2. It created a surreal feeling of terror in me as a child - like experiencing something inherently wrong. It was like playing a nightmare version of the game.

The first time I was frightened playing a video game was when I first played Mega Man 3 & beat all the robot masters. Suddenly four of the levels opened up with a menacing portrait draped in shadow. You would have to replay the levels, but they were broken and strange. Each level had two bosses...
