It's not coming out right at all. Hyunjin sighs and drops his pencil. It's… fine, he supposes, for what it is. What it was supposed to be. Just a cool down drawing, a doodle really, to clear his head. But it isn't coming out right and he still feels tetchy, wrong, like his skin is too tight and he can't reach the zipper. He tried to just sleep but his brain wouldn't let him, too preoccupied with that nameless something that always likes to strike at midnight. It's 2:19 now. Hyunjin sighs again. When in doubt, snack it out. (Was it Jisung who said that, or Felix? Maybe it was Confucius. Hyunjin would like to see you prove that it wasn't.) He's standing in the entryway with a mask in his hoodie pocket and one shoe on when a door clicks open down the hall. "Oh," Chan says softly. "Hey." "Hey." "Where're you going?" Hyunjin shrugs. "Convenience store, I guess." Chan hums and then looks down at his tank top and shorts. "Let me put some pants on." They walk in silence but it's nice. Comfortable. Hyunjin doesn't feel like talking anyway. He feels a bit better though, between the cool air and Chan's steady presence in his peripheral. It's soothing, like Chan is giving him permission to just exist in whatever state he's in. His mind relaxes a bit because it's being allowed to do so. The convenience store welcomes them, in their bummy outfits and tired eyes, with it's 24-hour glow. They separate wordlessly, Chan to the drinks fridge and Hyunjin to the instant noodles. He picks his favorite and a few extra toppings. On the way to find Chan he grabs a frozen kimbap to share. "Buy one get one," Chan says, holding out two bottles of the tea Hyunjin likes. "Cool. Go get noodles." "I think I want tteokbokki." At the register, Hyunjin fumbles with his phone just long enough for Chan to lean in and tap his on the reader instead. It makes a happy ding! and Hyunjin tsks. Chan just smiles, all dimples. Half the food is gone before either of them say anything. Hyunjin's mask is pulled down under his chin while he eats. There's tinny pop music playing, occasionally accompanied by the hum of the microwaves as other customers come and go. Hyunjin can hear Chan's chewing but it doesn't bother him. Their knees touch, sitting side by side at the counter—a single point of contact but so very warm. "You okay?" Chan says. Hyunjin shrugs. He is, he thinks. Better than before anyway. He's tired but in the good way, the I need to sleep way, instead of the I need to get hit with a frying pan way. "Just one of those days, you know?" Chan huffs a little laugh. "God, do I know." Hyunjin huffs back and they finish the last of the kimbap. "You didn't have to come with me," he says. "I mean, it's not that I didn't want you to, just… I know it's late. You didn't have to." "It's okay," Chan says. "I couldn't sleep anyway." "Shocker," Hyunjin says wryly. Chan leans over and bumps their shoulders together and it feels like bro, I paid for your meal. Hyunjin bumps him back: all's fair in love and convenience stores. Hyunjin feels lighter despite a belly full of food. His hand knocks into Chan's every once in a while as they walk. He snags their pinkies together and swings their arms until they slip out of each other's grasp and he starts again. Chan lets him, over and over. Hyunjin's eyelids are heavy but for some reason the thought of his bedroom feels oppressive rather than welcoming. Maybe he spent too much time stewing in there, feeling stuck. The vibes soured. Or maybe he just needs to open a window. Either way— "Hyung," he says, holding Chan's hand properly now, fingers laced, "can I sleep over tonight?" It's almost a silly question, as if they don't live in the same apartment anyway. But Chan says yes, squeezes his hand, and doesn't let go until they're taking their shoes off. Hyunjin is so tired, the bed is so soft, and Chan's arms are so very warm.

The bone is cheating, he knows. Purchased from the same butcher who provides him blood products in a pinch, vacuum-sealed using the contraption Minho uses when he wants to sous vide something, tucked carefully in an insulated lunchbag at the bottom of his backpack. It's a huge hunk, a lamb shank almost as long as his arm. Seungmin is pretty sure that Chan is aware he has it, based on the way he keeps darting his eyes to Seungmin's backpack, but he hasn't said anything. Instead, he tries to keep looking forward, walking at a quick clip as if he doesn't know the exact distance to the clearing and how much longer he has until the call of the moon is too strong to resist. He knows Chan is nervous, that he didn't want Seungmin to accompany him. Really, no one had wanted this. He'd never seen the group as quiet as when he said he could take Chan out, though that hadn't lasted long. Everyone had their own objections, none so firm and clear as Chan himself. But then Felix had mentioned how Chan had dislocated both his shoulders last month, how he'd dragged himself around the house for the next week after the full moon, stumbling and barely lucid. He'd been so exhausted and in so much pain that none of the potions Minho forced down his throat made a dent. Felix had been the first to take Seungmin's offer seriously, and then they'd all fallen like dominoes after that. All of them except Chan. Seungmin still isn't quite sure what convinced him. What was the key word that brought Chan out of the concrete basement to walk under the moon's light for the first time in months. There are no other wolves in their makeshift pack. No one to run with, to play with, to snap sharp teeth at and know that they'll be okay even if those teeth find their mark. Seungmin doesn't have the fur or the four legs, but he has sharp teeth all the same. He might actually be stronger than Chan, given his age, but they've never tested it. He knows that that strength, along with his speed, are what helped convince Changbin that this would be okay. Once they get to the clearing, Chan is quick to set his own pack down. It's empty now, only meant to hold the clothes he doesn't need while shifted. He turns sharply to face Seungmin and Seungmin has to stop himself from taking a breath he doesn't need. It's not quite dark yet, but the sun has set and there's a haze that covers the forest. The light that touches Chan's face is gentle and soft, highlighting the sharp lines of his jaw, his nose. He's blonde now, cut short and spiky and Seungmin is once again struck with the thought that Chan would make a beautiful vampire. Too bad the wolves got to him first. Chan's eyes dart to the sky behind Seungmin, and he knows that Chan is probably already fighting the change. It's too late, though, even if Seungmin wanted to leave there's no way Chan could get locked up before he's forced to shift. "Hyung—' "There's a gun in my bag," Chan interrupts. Seungmin blinks. "A tranquilizer gun, loaded with a sedative that Minho made. I had Hyunjin bind me to the dart, so as long as you're aiming in my general direction, it should find me." Seungmin frowns. "I have excellent aim, hyung." Chan's lips twitch in an approximation of a smile, though it drops quickly as the shadows around them deepen.

The first time Jeongin makes it rain, he doesn't realize it's him. It's his fifth birthday and his older brother had run off with the two friends their mother had allowed him to invite, and his baby brother had cried when he realized that he wasn't going to be able to open any of Jeongin's birthday presents. Jeongin, at his big old age of five years old, has realized that this is what this life is going to be from now on: his big brother ignoring him for friends his own age, and his baby brother drawing all the attention just because he's the baby. He's upset, but more than that, he's sad. It isn't fair, but what can Jeongin do about it? He's five; he can't throw a temper tantrum to get his way. He's too old for that. The clouds pour in so fast that no one has a chance to grab the presents or cover the cake before the rain comes down. His parents end up taking the whole group of kids out for bungeoppang and yuja-cha, fretting over late winter colds. The outdoor party had been Jeongin's idea. It isn't for another fifteen years that he realizes the rain was because of him, too. He'll never tell anyone, but Chan is Jeongin's favorite roommate. Chan steps in to take care of all the little annoyances that Jeongin never realized bothered him, from scheduling things to organizing the pantry to sorting through their laundry and making sure the right pieces always go to the dry cleaners. In return, Jeongin does his best to give as much as he takes. He wakes ten minutes before Chan's alarms so he can pull him out of sleep as gently as possible. He checks on him when Chan hits a stride in his home studio, switching out old water bottles with fresh ones, cutting up the fruit that Chan's bought and leaving it at his elbow, just like his mom used to. From home to rehearsal to various performance venues, Chan looks at him with bright, happy eyes, like Jeongin is his greatest dream come true, and Jeongin will do anything to make sure that never stops. Anything but this. Jeongin takes one step back, then another. Backs away until he bumps into the couch and almost falls to the ground, just barely catching himself on the arm. "Is that..." Chan clears his throat, glances behind Jeongin to the front door, "is that really what you think of me?" Jeongin can't speak. No, it's not. Yes, it is. He loves Chan and but he ne makes Jeongin crazy, makes Jeongin want to scream and tie him to a bed so Jeongin can make sure he's eating and sleeping and being taken care of. But no, because that's a crazy thought, and Jeongin loves being taken care of Chan, too. Loves that Chan will stay later at dinner when Jeongin's drunk too much, sipping on a glass of water. Loves that Chan will eat whatever Jeongin puts in front of him, even after Jeongin snuck in more gochugaru than he knows Chan can handle. Loves that Chan had simply laughed it off, even as he sweat and cried through the heat. Chan blinks, shakes his head like he does when he's trying not to cry. He brings his fists to his eyes, knuckling at them harshly. Jeongin's heart is breaking, and he still can't speak, can't even swallow against lump in his throat for making his hyung, his roommate, his partner in so many things, cry. He has to get out of here. He has to, before he brings a storm upon what has been a beautiful, clear night. Clear enough that you could see the stars, if they lived anywhere else but the center of the city. He pushes himself off the couch, distracted when he sees the water slide of his hand. When he goes to wipe his face, hoping to catch his tears before they fall, he's interrupted by Chan's voice yet again. "Jeongin?" He can't look at Chan, he can't. But there's something in his voice. Like the hurt, the betrayal, the sadness, have all dropped away. There's something else there now. Something that sounds strangely like wonder. Jeongin blinks as more water comes down, enough that he knows its not his tears, enough that it slicks his hair down against his skull. He knows he looks unfortunately round, like he took a jump into a pool with all his clothes on. He knows the water sloshing around his feet means that they'll have to get a special vacuum in here soon, unless they want to flood their downstairs neighbor. He knows all of this, but he can't focus on any of that. Not when he finally raises his eyes to lock on to Chan's. Chan's eyes are bright and shining. Pearls in the sea, rain drops catching the sunlight. The water falling around Jeongin slows, stops. He isn't sad any more.

23. "0801" - stray kids I know how it feels to be alone. I've wandered astray, I've been lost. At first he thinks the chill is because his heater's on the fritz. It's an old building; an ancient and landlord white radiator sits against the wall under the window, which can't be the best place for it. Chan cranks the dial as far as it'll go, hovering his hand over it until he sees his fingers pink up. Then Hyunjin comes over and strips down to his tank in less than ten minutes, bemoaning the warmth of Chan's apartment, leaning over said radiator to stick his head out into five degree weather. So it's just him, then. He's the only one shivering in random bursts, cold dripping down his spine no matter how many thermoses of tea he drinks down. For a while it's only at home. At the studio he feels like he always does, warmer than anyone else, shedding his hoodie, beanie, and scarf while Changbin lays a blanket across his own legs. But then the cold seems to latch onto him, following him out his apartment door into his workplace, tagging along when he goes to the noraebang with coworkers. Even when he goes over to Felix's to game, he shivers under the snuggie Felix drops on him, zapping Felix with static every Felix drops on him, zapping Felix with static every time he nudges against him. It's not great, but its bearable. He carries hand warmers wherever he goes, invests in insulated underclothing. Always has a thermos of near boiling water tucked into his bag. It's only at night, when his flannel sheets and weighted blanket and down comforter seem to disintegrate into thin air, that he really suffers. He's freezing, contemplating jumping into a hot shower, when he feels it. The brush of skin, human warm but feeling scorching hot, sliding against his forehead as if to move his bangs back. He tries to yelp, but his voice gets lost as he fights with his layers and layers of bedding. His building is old, but his locks are excellent. There shouldn't be anyone in his apartment, in his room with him. Finally, breathing hard and shaking, his hand slams against the lamp switch. Dull yellow light fills the space. There's a boy on his bed. Or, not a boy. A young man, a handful of years younger than Chan. Just on the cusp of adulthood, cheeks bulky with baby fat, hair swept to the side in a style Chan hasn't seen since elementary school. "Hi hyung," the boy says, grinning. "How - who - what - I don't -" The boy giggles. "You're my hyung, because you're older than me. Well, I was born before you, but I died when I was younger than you. You don't have birthdays after you die, so you're older than me." "Wait - what - died?" The boy flops next to Chan, still smiling. "Duh, hyung! In this apartment. My very first one." He raises his arm, watching as his hand moves through the light. His hand is solid, lightly tanned. Like he'd just come back from spending the day outside. It looks warm. "The heat was off, and the landlord kept putting off fixing it. I turned the oven on, 'cause that generates heat, right? But it was gas, and there was a leak, or..." the boy frowns, drops his hand. It lands perilously close to Chan's own. They're almost the same size, but the boy's hands look soft, graceful. Pianist hands, his mother would say. "I don't really know. I died." Chan doesn't know what to say. This can't be real. This has to be a weird fever dream, brought on by the fact that he's probably been sick for some time. He should have listened to Seungmin when he said to go to the doctor's. "It kind of sucked, honestly. There's so many things I wanted to do! And then I was just stuck here. For so long. And it was so boring. Nobody wanted to live here, and I couldn't go anywhere." The boy locks eyes with Chan. "But then you moved in. And hyung, you're so cool! You do music, like I did! And you like anime, and cute animal videos." The boy leans closer. Chan swears he can feel his breath. Moist, vaguely minty, and hot. "And best of all," the boy whispers, grin a little wider, a little sharper. "You were so warm." I'll stay forever, I'm right here.

Chan is particular about his nests. Honestly, he's particular about his entire household, but Minho is choosing to be charitable even in his own mind. They're coming awfully close to Chan's heat dropping and he's still fully dressed, puttering around his room and reaching out to gently tug a shirt or blanket a few centimeters to the left, then right, then back left again. He takes a step back and frowns, before approaching the bed again to tug harder at a hoodie laid over the outer edge. Jisung's, based on the faint waft of bright citrus and smoky cedar. Chan is particular, but he usually follows the same pattern: Minho's clothes at the head of the bed, Changbin's and Jisung's at his left and right shoulder, then Felix's and Hyunjin's on the left and right near their knees, and finally Seungmin's and Jeongin's at the foot of the bed. Chan's never explained his reasoning, but there's care and attention baked into Sweat has darkened Chan's shirt collar despite the hum of the air conditioner in the corner. Minho knows just how close he is to his heat, but his scent is still unhappily flat. A dull, oily amber, only the faintest hint of vanilla. No trace of the sharp lemongrass that usually dominates during Chan's heats, when he's happy and sated and smiling so hard that his cheeks are like hard little apples. Minho lets this go on for another ten minutes, watching as the sweat spreads across Chan's shirt. Listens as Chan's breathing gets harsher, smelling his scent get greasier and greasier. Finally, after Chan yanks harshly enough that the whole structure seems to wobble, he steps forward. "Chan-ah." Chan hums but doesn't turn his head, replacing the scarf he'd pulled with gentle hands, running his palms over it in apology. One of Hyunjin's, a too fancy gift from Felix from his first fashion week. Chan's eyes had gone so wide when Hyunjin had first pressed it into his hands to use in his nest. Minho's first baby alpha. He makes Minho proud. Minho takes another step forward, then another, until he's flush against Chan's back. He slides his hands down Chan's arms, tacky with sweat and riddled with goose pimples. "Chan-ah," he says again, directly against Chan's ear, lips touching his skin. Just as damp as his arms, but with his nose so much closer, at least he can pick up the lemongrass he so loves. Even a tiny bit of the nutmeg and black pepper that lies mostly dormant, unless Chan is feeling particularly feisty. "It's a beautiful nest, yeobo," he murmurs. It's cheating, he knows, to use that word when Chan is so close to heat. But this has gone on long enough. Sure enough, Chan's hands still on the scarf. He takes a single deep breath, then sags against Minho's frame. They stand together, just breathing, before Chan stiffens his spine and leans back towards the nest. "It's missing something."
