the CORRECT answer is two parts: 1) people get over themselves and accept that low frame rates were a technical limitation and not an artistic choice, and 2) black frame insertion needs to become a common option on TVs. Most TVs don't have the speed for that not to also look weird though.

Actually it really highlights the absurdity of this whole thing and how little people understand the tools they use. The closest thing to an *actual* "filmmaker mode" would be black frame insertion. The thing that smoothing is trying to fix is the full-open shutter of LCD screens.

If you simply MUST have it spelled out for you: frames are supposed to flash, not stay on. Modern TVs don't flash like they used to, therefore frames have to be manufactured to reduce the appearance of studdering.

I thought it was appropriate in a situation where public perception is shaped by mass incuriousness to encourage people to find the answer themselves for once.

This is the feature of film cameras and projectors: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rotary_...

and in CRTs: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flicker...

What characteristic does a film projector share with a CRT TV but not a modern TV

Everything is just slathered in moral hazard, market failure, loss aversion, status quo bias, FUD, status games, information failure; an entire ecosystem of shit we can name but can't solve. Or at least we can't solve it at scale or faster than it piles up

It sucks but an "aesthetics only" platform is enough for a governing majority in this country.

Overlay the closing credits, then cut to black and there's a voiceover comment along the lines of "thank god we recovered this". then credit roll.

Normally my dreams don't pull this kind of Absolute Cinema

At this point, the movie starts playing extremely rapidly in reverse, as though someone is pulling tape through a tape player backwards, until it gets to the opening title card. The film starts playing normally again, except now it's a work print and you can hear director cues
