Here's mine! In this scene, one of my characters is visited by an angel, indebted to him from some past adventure, who warns him of his imminent death! Gasp!
And at the name, in an iron burst of light and lightning, a booming rip through the silence he imposed upon the room, tearing in and down from a direction beyond direction; in a thorn upon the hidden compass rose known only to those with the eyes to see; in a strike out from the very heart of life, there appeared a being: feather-wrapped, wing-wielding, eye-watching—even an eye as cunning as Heinrich’s could scarcely tell it from the light it cast; until, at last, his eyes adjusted, and in the air before him hung a human-shape, fair and flimsy as a shadow. Heinrich Flammarion. “No.” We are hithercome to deliver thee from thy wanting wonder. “No—” Your death is writ and written by the thricefold turning of the moon, the quickening of the hours and the bronzing of the leaves. When the Hallow’d Evencomes, ye shall pass with the season. Silence. Rasputin sat back to watch the three others; to observe the little rituals that were their every movement: how that Alain cupped his chin in one hand and his arm in another, letting gravity hold him down and into place; how Dee paced, almost for the sake of pacing, possessed of some restless energy that persisted even after the end of the end of the Trail; how Juanita somehow always managed to find herself at the center of things—not egocentrically, but heliocentrically, as if it were only natural that the rest of them would orbit her; as if they were, in their gathering, the order of the whole of things in microcosm. Juanita bent to examine Ozrannoch’s carrier, where the little demon lay curled in on itself, its sharp eyes only half-open. “How did you get out this time, Ozzy?” Ozrannoch yawned, his forked tongue flickering, and shut his eyes. “Who knows?” Alain said. “I half-wonder if Dee let him out.” “Why, sir! I resent that assertion! I would never, never, endanger the psycho-spiritual safety of the Haus and its inhabitants, on this or any plane…” As they spoke, the eyes of all the others fell on them, one by one, and only when that fact was unavoidable did Dee at last throw up their hands and hang their jeweled head. “Okay, fine. But it gets boring around here! Sometimes you’ve got to invent some drama!” Finished with one beer, they waved a hand, and the empty bottle refilled itself with a glittering, almost radiant liquid. “Besides, it’s not like it was one of the big ones.” And then, with an eye on Rasputin, they said, “Just wait until you meet Zurr. Now there’s a scary motherfucker.” Rasputin cast a raised eyebrow at Alain and Juanita. Alain waved a hand. “Later. Some things command a bit more respect in conversation, even from our resident demonologist.”

CW: Attempted sexual assault! The pressure grew. The pain rose—a spark into a flame. The teeth felt strange now, sharp. “Hey,” Parks said. “That’s too—” “Shh,” the man said. “Don’t fight. Your whole life has been a fight, babe. You deserve something nice. You deserve full, fat horizons of bounty and plenty. You deserve the marble of the world warming in your hand. You’re a star. You deserve to shine.” Again that wave of warmth, shooting down, but there was a tinge to it now—a dark edge, cutting parallel to the mounting pain. Parks pushed back, pushed away. “Stop it,” he said. But the man did not. “Say my name.” “No.” “Say it.” “I—I can’t—I don’t know it, I—” But it came, then, into his mind as if through an open door: a wordless word, as a rolling of thunder or the ageless shifting of the earth, without syllable, without phoneme, without meaning—just a long, formless uttering, a sound that was defiance, was depravity, was devourance… the sound filled him, his mind, his body, pushing the blood from his veins and his thoughts from his head, filling him until it threatened to burst, to split his being all along its seams—until it forced its way up and out of his mouth: that long, dark, rumbling, raucous, nameless name. The man drank it, that implanted echo, and moaned again, still impossibly speaking and biting at once, as if his every appendage was a mouth, gasping and grasping and gnawing and pressed up against him—smothering, drowning, choking— Parks mounted all the strength he could and shoved, hard, and pushed the fucker off of him. “Fuck off me, asshole!” Something was wrong. Worse than wrong. The man’s shadow, his form, was too large. His arms spilled down to the ground, his jaw long and wide, almost a snake’s—but this was only an instant. In another, he was just the Marine again, just as he had been—and it was only his shadow that twisted and writhed. The man wiped the corner of his mouth, dabbed away a spot of blood. “Bad boy,” he said.

Dee took a deep breath. The silver fires reared and roared on their blackened wicks in parallel, and they were outside themself, observing from a perch the little spheres within the greater-sphere, held back by the sheer white lines from the beyond, the Nothingness, the Abyss, the Inward Expanse into which they called a name; the first whose shadow passed between the sun of the Source and the desert of zen that was their mind: “Ytharlep!” The intonation did not stop there, but rolled on, momentous as an avalanche, in a voice now greater than the body that stirred it; so great, in fact, that it became almost a response from the waiting void, an answer to some call, some bidding. YTHARLEP WHO IS SILENCE, AND SUFFERING, AND SADNESS YTHARLEP WHO IS PRICE AND PAIN AND LOSS YTHARLEP WHO WAITS HUNGRY AT THE END OF ALL THINGS From the shambling darkness rose an arm, a great grey hand, drifting and lifting as if from up beneath a vast and heavy pool, a hand laden with eyes, peeking and peering out from the folds of its palm, ripping out as dragon’s teeth from between creases and lifelines. Good, Dee thought. Now for the hard part.
