I think surrounding the area with color is the way to go. Maybe paint the wall or hang some fabric? And a colorful rug. It'll reflect off the shiny white and metal table, and make the wood look better too.

You could use a table runner so the front and back remain open? And maybe a decorative tray on the little shelf so you could easily access whatever you store there.
