Carbon in the form of hydrocarbons and carbohydrates has a lot of value and is a huge part of the value chains (from fuel to agriculture to pharmaceuticals).

Alberta Carbon Tax funds all go into the TIER program. They are then available for industry to fund low-carbon process improvements within the province. Innovative corporations can get all their funds back. The politicians love handing out the reinvestment cheques. Their outrage is performative.
