I’ve only been here a few hours and met some lovely people already. Thank you for saying hello.
Thought I’d drop in one of my favourite photos. It helped win me a portfolio commendation in the Scottish Landscape Photographer of the Year Awards. Taken in a snowstorm on the slopes of Arthur’s Seat.

Absolutely delighted to be awarded first place in the International Garden Photographer of the Year Competition, Trees, Woods & Forests category. Travelled down to Kew Gardens for the ceremony yesterday and enjoyed meeting up with many of the other winners. Well done everyone! 👏

It’s been good to scroll through some of my Iceland photos again. I liked this one mainly because of the contrast in textures, ice and rock. I printed this one for an exhibition and it works a lot better on paper than a wee screen. The glacier looks like it could be an etching.

My boat images are usually a literal representation of what I see. I may increase the intensity of the colour or straighten lines etc but generally I’d recognise the boat if I saw it again. I’ve now been thinking “what would happen if” . . as an artist might do, and trying to imagine how I might print the images differently to the way I’d present a landscape. I opened my art drawer this week and saw a box of oil pastels and was immediately reminded of this image. It’s a negative - the boat was black but reversing the colours gives you this beautifully delicate impression of pastels on detail paper. When yachts are lifted out of the water, the owners usually have to power wash them on the slipway whilst still in the slings, as they aren’t allowed to make a mess in the marina or yard itself. The sling marks remain all year and once affected by the anti foul and the weather, I’m left with the art.

After our Iceland trip this emerged as one of my favourites. We were on our way out to the aircraft wreck but as a rain cloud swept in over the lava fields I thought it would provide some asymmetry to this otherwise symmetrical mountain. It was just a case of waiting for the right moment.

One of the most colourful sunsets I’ve ever seen. It lasted over half an hour too, as the low trajectory of the sun in the far north extended it so much more than here in Scotland. I caught the reflection on the facade of the city library, an impressive modernist building beside the river in Umeå.

Very pleased to find out my yacht photo from Gairloch is a Runner-Up in the Close-up Photographer of the Year competition! I remember stopping at the harbour last summer in the pouring rain to find only one boat up out of the water but I knew it was a good one! Well done to all the other finalists. I don’t recognise many of the names in this genre of photography but I did spot Paul Kenny with a win and Klaus Axelsen is a finalist too. If you like the more abstract side of photography do look them up. Very different styles but equally brilliant. Many thanks to @cupoty for selecting my photo.
