I read "Eat the Ones You Love" by Sarah Maria Griffin.

Slow paced but utterly enthralling creepy horror book. It's like a queer (and more sensual, but equally threatening) version of Little Shop of Horrors.

I read "The Midnight Shift" by Seon-Ran Cheon.

A vampire murder-mystery set in South Korea, where the only people who care about the multiple "suicides" at a hospice is a detective and the mysterious civilian who tells her vampires are to blame.

I read "What Stalks the Deep" by T.Kingfisher, the third book of her Sworn Soldier novella series.

Easton goes to America at a friend's request to check out spooky mine shenanigans (because "if shit goes down, you won't waste time saying "this is impossible" when we need to be fleeing").

I just read *Flowers for the Sea* by Zin E. Rocklyn, narrated by Amina Koroma.

This is a dark fantasy horror novella. Major trigger warnings for body horror (most heavily related to pregnancy/childbirth); also misogyny, xenophobia, death, assault.

The writing is VISCERAL.

I just finished *Being Heumann*, the memoir of disability rights activist Judy Heumann. Audiobook narrated by Ali Stroker.

My workplace started an inclusivity focused bookclub and this was the first pick. Really well written and engaging (the narrator was excellent as well).

I finished "One Message Remains" by Premee Mohamed last night and I had to let it sit with me for awhile before I felt ready to talk about it.

Finished "Sunrise on the Reaping".

A good installation in the Hunger Games series. Be prepared for tears.

I read "The Dead Cat Tail Assassins" by P. Djèlí Clark.

A dark fantasy novella that reads like a ttrpg one shot, but in a good way. The main protagonist is snarky but likeable, the plot is engaging, and the worldbuilding is startling immersive (especially for such a short piece book).

I read "The River Has Roots" by Amal El-Mohtar, a fairytale novella about a sisterly bond so deep it cannot be broken, with a magic system based on grammar and language in all its transformative and creative and playful glory.

SO. GOOD.

I read "It Lasts Forever and Then It's Over" by Anne de Marcken.

This is a weird post-apocalyptic zombie novella that's has a loose journey-plot, but is primarily a mediation on grief.

Good, emotional, weird. I'd read a library copy but now I want to order a shelf copy for myself.

I read "The City in Glass" by Nghi Vo.

This is a weird but beautiful book. It's an exploration of love and grief, and it is more like a character study and a love letter to a city than it is a straightforward plot.

I read "Even Though I Knew the End" by C.L. Polk.

This was a random bookstore find, a 133 page novella that I took one look at and said "oh that's going to hurt my feelings".

Well, I was right. It hurt my feels in the best/worst way.

I read "Lucy Undying" by Kiersten White. Audiobook narrated by an ensemble cast (mostly in dual style, but a two chapters are done in duet instead).

The story of Lucy from Bram Stoker's Dracula - an unsubtle but powerful look at her story both during events of the book and after her presumed death.

Just finished "But Not Too Bold" by Hache Pueyo, a fantasy horror novella with a surprisingly sweet heart.

Content warning for tarantulas. They're very gentle and lovely, but they are a near-constant presence.

I finished the book and then clutched it to my chest, hugging it tight. SO. GOOD.

I read "Annie Bot" by Sierra Greer, narrated by Jennifer Jill Araya.

An excellent but high anxiety read! It **grips** the themes of transhumanism and feminism. I cared about the protagonist SO DAMN MUCH. I couldn't read fast enough near the end.

Content warnings in the next comment...

I read *The Night Guest* by Hildur Knútsdóttir, translated and narrated by Mary Robinette Kowal.

A short horror novella set in modern day Reykjavik. It's very well written and the translator did an amazing job. I was enthralled and filled with vague dread almost the entire time.

I read "A Magical Girl Retires" by Park Seolyeon, translated from the original Korean by Anton Hur and narrated by Shannon Tyo.

A millennial struggling with credit card debt and life in general finds out she's destined to be a Magical Girl... and that being magical is more mundane than you'd think.

January reading wrap-up!

Down from December but that's not a surprise (less driving time and less downtime).

It doesn't report DNFs, but I quit out of two books in January! Was a bit worried it was a bad omen but read multiple AMAZING books.

I should probably read a nonfiction soon, oop.

I played Lifeless Planet on Steam from Serenity Forge (developer and publisher). Gameplay mechanics were a little clumsy at times, but only occasionally a bother. The atmosphere was creepy as fuck, which was excellent. The story was easy to follow but still intriguing. Altogether, very enjoyable!

Better photos in daylight (maybe), but brightened up my hair! Return of the bog witch.

I read The Brides of High Hill by Nghi Vo, narrated by Cindy Kay. This is the fifth book in The Singing Hills Cycle. In this installation, cleric-historian Chih is accompanying a young bride to her wedding, and soon finds themself caught in a gothic horror story with terrifying stakes.

SO. GOOD.

Just finished "North is the Night" by Emily Rath. A historical fantasy with strong romance elements, based on Finnish mythology.

There's deep world-building, some really cool underworld stuff, multi-angled love stories, and women finding their own strength in the world.

Also a very cool bear.
