there are indeed lots of incredibly talented must-read journalists who've lost jobs and it's fucking awful. but the outlets being abandoned by readers (and advertisers) *had business models* that once worked. lots of smart people have spent two decades trying (and mostly failing) to find new ones.

also why proposals to let employed people pick their own insurance on the market (funded e.g. through pre-tax employer matched accounts) have also gone nowhere. maximizes the disruption involved in changing jobs.

i think the fact that "small-market" NBA teams actually seem to struggle at least as much to attract or retain superstars, despite all the NBA's caps on individual and team salaries, is a very significant problem for the pro-cap competitiveness argument.

if you just want competitive balance, the more obvious and direct way to achieve that would be more revenue sharing combined with some sort of floor. hasn't there been years of talk already about a floor to punish deadbeat mooch owners, even outside of the "cap" debate?
