That said, I think the basic reason is that the Empire depended on a strong State supporting a strong Army, and vice versa. And both were weakened for various reasons at that time, so they did not end up being able to support each other. But let @patrickwyman.bsky.social tell you why I am wrong.

I listened to @patrickwyman.bsky.social's entire Fall of Rome podcast, and I still can't give you a simple explanation for why the Western Roman Empire fell. So I think the actual answer to this question is "it's complicated" (like most questions like this). But curious what Patrick would say.
