My parents were accountants and we had a couple Funk & Wagnalls encyclopedias (never the whole set lol) that they bought at the grocery store & few other random novels from garage sales in the house. I was amazed to meet all the grad students with PhD parents and libraries in their houses.

And, sadly, 99% of the books mentioned here are written by journalists, not historians. Most historians focus on finding & analyzing primary evidence, prioritizing original analysis over narrative. Journalists, on the other hand, are good at tuning the hard work of historians into gripping tales.
