“What are you trying to say? That you don’t believe me? I’m trying, Buck. I’ve been trying so damn hard to make this easy,” Eddie brokenly rasped. “But you’re making things difficult every single time you question if this is what I want.” He paused for a second, reflecting on what he said next before continuing. “Why can’t you just trust me, when I say that this is what I want?” Eddie quietly pleaded. “I trust you to know what you want…I just don’t trust that you’d ever act on it,” Buck plainly stated as his voice grew hoarse with words he didn’t dare say. Something rattled in his chest and broke free from its cage. He needed someone to believe that this was a good decision. He needed Buck to reaffirm his decision because if someone else repeated the lies Eddie voiced to himself, he could make them real…he could make them believable. OR: Where Buck always runs toward something and Eddie always runs away.

You believe in fate?” he humorlessly questioned. “How can I not, when fate seems to have brought you to me?” Buck smirked, crossing further into his space to the point where their shoulders brushed up against each other. Eddie disliked the instinctive way his shoulders curved inward toward Buck, as though searching for any physical encounter. Whether it be purposeful or accidental he simply wanted more. Had it been so long, since he had any form of intimacy that he was nearly sweating from a brief shoulder brush? Eddie couldn’t even blame the warmth in his cheeks on the sweltering humid heat. “You must have found extreme favor in fate because it’s brought many people to you,” he teasingly murmured, breaking himself out of the reverential haze he found himself succumbing to. He pointed to the purpling bruise, situated halfway underneath the collar of Buck’s shirt. Buck sheepishly brought his hand toward the hickey like he had forgotten it was there.

His throat grew thick with emotion as rays of sun filtered through the trees’ leaves and left shadows on the stone. Light shone on Daniel’s engraved name and then a cloud passed, blanketing his name once more in lifeless shadows. “Everyday I wish you were here and I try pretending that isn’t selfish,” he brokenly whispered. “You were a far better man than I am. I’m just a poor imitation of the son dad lost and can never fully grieve. I shouldn’t feel angry, but I am. Why did you have to pass this unbearable responsibility of being the son...the heir that our dad never…” He broke off, feeling the signs of a headache coming up. He drew the cigarette up to his lips, hating the weight and taste of it. Smoke curled out in front of him and fell over the stone in front of his knees. With one hand dragging the cigarette back to his lips, he used the other to rest on the cool grass. “Why didn’t you look after yourself? Why weren’t you selfish?” he cried as he pinched the blades of grass between his fingers. “It would’ve been more beneficial to both of us, if you hadn’t come back for me. You were fine. You were safe. You were doing so much better. Treatments were working and then you…you did this. And I can’t stop being angry because you making the decision to save me is kind of killing me right now.” He sardonically laughed as he picked apart the grass in his hand. “I was never meant to be king, Danny," he said, reverting back to the nickname he would sometimes call his brother whenever he was feeling sentimental. He ignored the prickle of tears and blinked them away.

Eddie marveled at the stone sculptures. He stood enraptured, whilst the other museum visitors easily moved from one art piece to the next. He settled on that sculpture, the two bodies closely melded together. His heart beat stuttered in quick succession in his chest. He wondered did they feel as he felt, this solid immovable force? Did they desire to live beyond those museum walls, full of crown molding and marbled floors? Or were they content, captured in a lover's embrace immortalized forever? Buck walked toward him, broad shoulders bumping against his. Face turned upward to the sculpture of two lovers, he tilted his head down in Eddie's direction. "You're just like 'em you know," he said. Eddie felt fear seize in his chest, eyes flickering up at the statue once more. With further prompting and the ghost of a smile on reddened lips---from the berry hibiscus tea---he continued by saying, "You're softness made of stone." And with a soft exhalation, that sounded like a prayer, Buck added, "And just as beautiful." OR Where Eddie realizes he can't outrun the things that hurt him, but damn does he try.

Prince Evan, affectionately known as Buck to those who are lucky to gain his favor, has long since abandoned his royal duties. Occupied with throwing outlandish parties and expensive vacations, he sets out to be the royal son his parents never wanted. Unfortunately, after the abdication of his father, Buck finds himself having to fulfill two of his most hated royal duties — kingship and marriage. When Eddie Diaz leaves his home country (runs away) to settle in the land of Cerōnia, he decides to keep his head down in order to protect his son. He finds a nice job as a low-level cook, always hidden away in the kitchen. He holds no desire to be familiar with the people of this country nor the royal family, especially their youngest son, Prince Evan. He has heard the rumors of an arrogant prince who seeks out as many lovers as he does fights and resolves that the prince is someone he never wants to meet. OR: When Buck meets Eddie, he decides the surest way to incur the wrath of his parents and the council is to marry a kitchen cook. When Eddie meets Prince Evan, he wants to know whether it would be considered treason to push a prince off of the nearest cliff.
