I haven't felt excited about July 4th since reading Fredrick Douglass's speech, and now, given some states' legally enforced amnesia about our past, celebrating July 4th as the beginning of "our" freedom increasingly feels like flying the Confederate flag "because of our southern heritage." #philsky
