We understand that security forces in Tehran have detained several researchers and writers. While some were held only briefly and have since been released, we remain concerned that these arrests may form part of a broader pattern of pressure on academic freedom in Iran. (2/3)

This cancellation represents a grave violation of France’s obligations to respect academic freedom. We are particularly concerned by the ways in which the notions of “scientificity” and “scholarly rigor” are being invoked to suppress legitimate scholarly activities. (2/3)

We urge the university to reconsider Mr Ghanem’s suspension, to review its disciplinary and protest-related policies to ensure they do not penalise lawful expression, and to take all necessary steps to allow him to continue his studies - and to remain in safety - in the UK. 3/3

As a result of this suspension, Mr Ghanem faces the prospect of being forced to return to Egypt, where there are credible and serious risks to his safety and wellbeing. 2/3
