2.) Corporate propaganda to encourage travel and spending. Trying to claim it while not specifying why they broke records is to normalize everything and distract people from the fact that the higher price gouging happening.
Those are my theories at least. Short term hiding the truth is my guess.

I realized two things over Thanksgiving when Black Friday numbers were predicted to be record setting that I think applies here.
1.) With prices being higher and people swallowing the shock and going there are record profits because everything is so expensive and thus bigger profit margins.
