Been on a non stop London to York where that happened and my schadenfreude was tempered when we made an unscheduled stop at Stevenage to let them off. Though I suppose that meant they were in Stevenage...

I take a peak time train from Yorkshire to London most weeks. Because of the extortionate peak fares, it's consistently dead. I've had someone sit next to me twice - in two years.
Strikes me they could afford to experiment with the balance of fares and occupancy?

Same at my son's comp. To be fair, it was the same for us 30 yrs ago, but we were allowed to leave our books in the classroom and didn't also have a laptop to cart around. The justification for carrying the books round is so parents can look at them :-/

This is so true. One person can't have the breadth of experience, insight and reach that a group of people can bring. And if Mayors don't need scrutiny, then why does Hackney need 57 councillors, or Lewisham 54 (etc)?
