There is no immediate news on tariffs out of this meeting. However, Carney's office says the two leaders directed their officials to "move quickly to resolve outstanding trade issues", and discussed solutions to "canola, as well as seafood and electric vehicles"

Asked if he's upset at Doug Ford over the ad, Carney said: "In any complicated high stakes negotiation, you can get unexpected twists and turns and you have to keep your cool during those situations." Said he stands by the progress made, and "we are ready, when appropriate, to pick that up."

Carney said the two sides were exchanging term sheets on a deal on metals tariffs. "There were a series of very detailed, very specific, very comprehensive discussions, negotiations... up until the point of those ads running." He suggested taking Trump at his word that talks were halted over the ad.

Speaking to reporters here in Malaysia, Carney said he hasn't talked to Trump since trade talks were halted and hadn't yet seen Trump's comments today. He insisted the two sides were close to a deal, and said "we're ready to sit down when they're ready to do that."
