Only issue of Spawn I've read is issue 8, the one Alan Moore wrote, it's pretty good. It also has a pull-out poster from Frank Miller in it and a letter from Diana Schutz where she's like "I checked this out to see what all the kids are into, and I get what you're going for"

And yeah my brother (half-brother, different last name) is an artist, really great drawer, but works in design mostly (when he's employed, he paints when he's unemployed). Never made comics but liked Todd's Spider-Man/Spawn and Sam Kieth (and before that, John Byrne) before I got into comics in '92

Well he's not doing just enough, he's wilding out within his idiom, really pushing it visually in a manga-esque (noted Otomo fan) way at a time when that was not looked at kindly, certainly not by people who liked Los Bros/Toth-esque clarity
