OTD in 1942, the US Navy suffered a defeat at the Battle of Tassafaronga, losing the heavy cruiser Northampton, with the heavy cruisers New Orleans, Minneapolis and Pensacola heavily damaged by Japanese torpedoes. Considered the third worse US Navy defeat behind Pearl Harbor and Savo Island.

The USS Von Steuben (formerly the NDL liner Kronprinz Wilhelm) was heading for Halifax when the explosion occurred. Her crew was used for search and rescue and patrolling the streets until she left for Philadelphia on December 10th.

Didn't even last as long in service as an Independence class littoral combat ship.
