Numerical weather prediction, data assimilation, satellite and conventional weather observations. (Former) AI curmudgeon and (current, still) generalized bad ideas haver.
Watching BTC crash from the sidelines, this must be what it feels like to be a non-American or an expat and watching the US from a distance right now. "Looks bad, hope that mess doesn't splash on me".

I keep seeing this Base44 ad where some office rando says "I just made a budgeting app" and while the coders scoff the boss asks if it can write reports. A VIBE CODED BUSINESS BUDGETING APP, this is the sales pitch they CHOSE to present for their service.

I am racking my brain trying to figure out how senate Dems lose out on a "either you adopt our restrictions on DHS or DHS stops getting paychecks" negotiating position, but I'm prepared to be surprised/enraged.
Senate Majority Leader John Thune said Thursday that demands made by Democrats for new restrictions on federal immigration officers are “unrealistic” and warned that the Department of Homeland Security will shut down next week if they do not work with Republicans and the White House.

"They could achieve victory over the Baltics in just a few days", the simulation confirms in reference to a country that is currently 4 years into its just-going-to-take-a-few-days occupation of a neighboring sovereign
🇩🇪 The German Center for War Games organized a simulation of a Russian attack on the Baltics in October 2026. The results were alarming: Moscow could achieve its goals within days due to NATO indecision.

Shout out to Punxsutawney Phil, the last meteorologist on social media who isn't demanding that I Like, Subscribe, Comment Below, Join The Patreon, Send A Super-Chat, Sign Up For The Substack, or Use The Promo Code For A Free $5 At Draft Kings. His forecasts suck, but he's a real one.

I encourage anyone presenting anything for AMS annual to record their presentation and just upload it to YouTube. A ton of people were not able to make it to see your work, and AMS charges a rapacious $570 fee for virtual attendance (!!).

Coding with Claude is like being the supervisor: someone else is writing the code based on my incessant complaints, I have no idea if they are doing it correctly, and if it fails I will be the one to catch heat for it. I don't like being a supervisor.

So far I'm impressed with Claude as a coding assistant, it is very good at taking my garbage scripty-code and turning it into something with proper classes and exception handling.

But there's something about its whimsical verbiage ("twisting...", "smooshing..." etc.) that is off-putting.

and that answer to every question will be "the Senate Parliamentarian says we can't do that, sorry! Make another $2 donation and we'll get em next time I bet!"
New - Chuck Schumer to haters: “The answer to these critics is to win. If we win back the Senate, that will answer every question"

He says Dem path to Senate is Ohio, Alaska, Maine and NC. Dems are watching Texas/Iowa

I see all gambling as equally a waste of time getting got at a rigged table: Vegas, crypto, kalshi and its horrible children, all of it. If you engage with any of these, congrats, you’re the sucker at the table.

I'm watching commentary on RaptureTok and I can't help but see crossovers to this brand of wishcasting. And like the Rapture, it doesn't matter how many times a date comes and goes without The Event happening, a new date will emerge.

Similar to MOASS apes, too. An exploited bug in the human brain.
