Oh dear. Such a shame. I loved that it was both very unionized (and still is of course) and was virtually classless in both the micro and meta senses. And of course a very good safety record, especially considering how my cycles they do.

Wonderful books. My dad spent two years as a Jewish American academic in an English research facility (after which he got an appointment at Stanford) so the books felt quite personal to me.

One of the joys of playing in a full-time professional quartet (which I did for a year) was generally having enough rehearsal time. Not always, of course. But we usually rehearsed 4 hours a day, so even we were short time for a particular piece, the familiarity with each other made up for it.

It is indeed. I just wonder to what extent he realized at this point just what he’d created, and just how scary it was. I find it telling that he never did anything quite like it again, and I’ve always wondered why not.
