Heck of an opening day! 7 remains an absolute menace, and 9 came out of her shell this year and gained a lot of confidence. Suffice to say they are both smoking me now.

😍 opening day motherfuckers! ⛷️

I want to show you the magic of Steve Cropper in a way I first got hip to in Bobby Previte’s improv course. Everyone knows Green Onions, right? If not think of The Sandlot - OK now you got it. I love this song, but it is so well known I was actually shocked when Bobby brought it up as an example.

Snagged 7 a new pair of boots for a steal, got 9 the SkiNY passport - $45 gets 2x lift tix w/ adult pass at virtually any NY resort! - and snagged myself a sick brand new goretex shell for like 150 off the top. Tuning, waxing, and sharpening everything tomorrow and we are officially ready to shred!⛷️

How old heads feel talking about weed in 2025

In a totally different direction, one of my very favorite discoveries (made from a friend here on BSky!) was Jaubi! They are an amazing jazz group from Pakistan that seemlessly blend jazz harmony with the eastern concept of melody w delightful results. Similarly fun “world” style group - L’Antidote

Obsessing over Norman’s tune Church Street Blues took me to Tony Rice’s version and many of his great albums!

I really fell for Norman Blake this year. The way he stays so relaxed and effortless while playing such complex picking patterns is a real inspiration, and I find myself saying WWNBD? whenever I feel myself tightening up during a fast tricky passage. It’s really helped my playing!

Another tune I learned and loved was Squirrel Hunters, which brought me to this incredible album by John Hartford, Wild Hog in the Red Brush. The way John introduces the songs by singing the name on the tonic (and even sometimes continue to tell the story of the song on the same note) knocks me out

Often when a tune caught my ear, I’d go find the artist or even look up a definitive modern version. One of my favorites is a tune called The Coo Coo Bird, a driving banjo tune by Tom “Clarence” Ashley that med me to his great album with Doc Watson.

I’ve been playing a ton of bluegrass, Irish, old time music this year, and read an incredible biography of Harry Smith, so naturally his landmark Anthology of American Folk Music got lots of play. It’s not available on streaming so I had to buy a set of CDs for the first time and a very long time.

Diving into that cover made me search out the original, and I eventually fell down the Northern Soul rabbithole. Northern Soul is a dance and DJ culture from the UK based around spinning a lot of great US soul from the early 60s, and I found some absolute gems throughout!

I listened to a lot of acoustic music this year!

Really dug this Best of John Fahey! This was my driving album for a couple months.

Lots of old time fiddle great Bruce Molsky, esp the gut-wrenching Piney Mountains and this fantastic album with Darrol Anger, esp their cover of Can I Change My Mind.

This fucking part! Even if you can overlook the evil billionaire owner (no ethical consumption etc.), thinking and arguing about and putting into words what music you loved this year is one of the FUN parts of listening to music!

Let’s not outsource the fun!

🧵Tell me some music you loved in 2025!

One of 7’s good boots lost the metal loop for its strap, and I had the most transcendent moment a father can experience: instantaneous recall of the perfect piece and its exact location, where it has languished for over 5 years deemed “potentially useful for a future project.”

IT FUCKING HAPPENED!
