But even now, there's no reason I can possibly see why any American would look at Russia and think "boy, I wish we were more like that!" Christ, there's barely any reason for Americans to even look at Russia in the first place. Maybe that's the problem?

Oh they've been the bad guys since Catherine the Great. There was a certain argument to be made, perhaps as late as the 1960's, that Soviet Communism & American Capitalism were each viable economic concepts. It was never true, but the argument was plausible. 1983 should've ended that for all time.

We also have an issue where our Democrat Party's "big tent" is way too big; at least 30% of them are effectively Republicans. But the GOP brand is so tainted here (and the current crop of GOP pols are total psychopaths) that they can't get elected without a D by their name.

The curse of Rhode Island, yes. Anyone with any ambition or skill tries too hard to go too high from the start. Anyone willing and able to put up with the tsunami of bullshit that faces freshmen state legislators is "small potatoes."

What amazes me more than anything else is how being cozy with the Russians is no longer an automatic "go directly to jail" card. Having grown up during the Cold War, and studied a modicum of history, it just blows me away that it would ever be even slightly acceptable to sell Ukraine up the river.

If the old saying is true that "Comedy is tragedy plus time"? This rips the time out like a hooked hand ripping your heart out of your chest. It's just heart-stomping tragedy. It'd be amazing in another film, though.

I didn't know this. Googled around until I found the script. I read it and I could hear Candy's voice perfectly in every word.

My God.

It's a shame it had to be cut, but it most definitely needed to be. Would've destroyed every ounce of comedy in the whole film.

I suspect he was always just beyond his own.

Partly, yes. He's good at the gladhanding stuff a small town mayor needs to do. But there was also a paucity of viable alternatives. A friend who's a resident told me they all voted for him to be LG to get him out of town & into a harmless office. Oops.

The funny bit is that it implicitly means either Buchanan was too honest and "decent" to ever win on his platform of hatred & racism, or that he wasn't a sufficiently good enough con man to scam the country into believing his nonsense.

A "short sell" of Ferengi.

Mind you, I voted for her twice. Much as I dislike her (and I have both direct personal and professional reasons to dislike her) simply because she was amazingly competent, and nearly all RI pols are "fucking clown shoes" level of incompetent idiots. I'll settle for competent in that case.

Droll, sir. Very droll.

In regards to Lizza, calling him a "journalist" is a strong word, here.

Yet they lived thru Afghanistan and Iraq. The Great Recession & Housing crash. A global pandemic. Two terms of Trump. These aren't snowflakes. Plus anyone who largely missed the "good years" of the dotcom boom has a mark in their favor as far as I'm concerned.

I don't know if I believe this. It seems too smart a move for her to be that stupid.
November 26, 2025 at 6:46 PM
It's been rammed home here in RI too since when Raimondo left to be SecCom, the LtGov was Dan McKee and he's proven himself to be a totally incompetent idiot. He was useless as mayor of Cumberland and he's taken that uselessness to the next level as Governor.
November 26, 2025 at 6:12 PM
I can 100% get behind that.
November 26, 2025 at 6:10 PM
Seriously? Under no circumstances should that age be raised. If anything, it should be lowered. I wouldn't trust anyone under 45-50 right now (and I'm in that age range) b/c the f**king Boomers held on with such a death grip that very few Xers know shit about good politics.

A room-temperature cheese wheel could put up at least one or two TD's per game under Shanahan's schema. That's why the big payday to Purdy was so stupid. But it's true that Belichick was a terrible coach for Jones, and his ceiling was well above where he was with the Patriots.
