Big old nerd who is learning to become a better artist by drawing something every day for a year (or more!)

Brisbane, Australia.
Day 30 of learning to be a better artist by drawing something every day.

Random practice today, but I did spend time looking at the art of Samwise Didier (hence the ogre). He's always been an artistic inspiration of mine, though his catch phrase of "Always Be Creating" resonates even stronger now.

Day 29 of learning to be a better artist by drawing something every day.

Today I continued my lessons with Rodgon the Artist, but I also had goblins, hobgoblins, and other creatures on the mind after playing some World of Warcraft 🤓

Day 28 of learning to be a better artist by drawing something every day.

Today's practice focused on exercises from a course I am really enjoying that is taught by Rodgon the Artist.

Day 27 of learning to be a better artist by drawing something every day.

Long day at work today, so just some basic practice tonight. Though I did also start a course by Rodgon the Artist, who I find has an interesting and unique way of explaining form that clicks with the way my brain works.

Day 26 of learning to be a better artist by drawing something every day.

Practice, practice, practice. I used some reference for the cheeky old guy and drew the rest from imagination. I figure combining reference studies and imagination should help with learning.

Day 25 of learning to be a better artist by drawing something every day.

More practice with head/face proportions drawing (roughly) from reference, and some quick poses from imagination using an interesting method I learned from Rodgon the Artist.

Day 24 of learning to be a better artist by drawing something every day.

Took an online course about proportions and the key take away was that I need to spend some time drawing from reference (vs imagination) to better understand proportions. Still working on line weight variation too.

Day 23 of learning to be a better artist by drawing something every day.

Lazy Saturday. Just practiced a new method of finding different head shapes, and kept trying to apply the theory of line weight variation, which I am still struggling with a lot.

Day 22 learning to be a better artist by drawing something every day.

Today's practice was mostly just random doodles I did while taking a short course called "Designing Kawaii Worlds: Spread Joy Through Illustration"

Day 21 of learning to be a better artist by drawing something every day.

It may not look like much, but this was by far the most challenging thing I have drawn in a long time. Possibly ever.

This is my attempt at one of the projects in the book "Beginner's Guide to Drawing the Future".

Day 20 of learning to be a better artist by drawing something every day.

Today I tried drawing heads from different angles and with different shapes. This has been something I have struggled with (all my heads end up looking the same - you can see this a bit here. I started with the bottom two).

Day 19 of learning to be a better artist by drawing something every day.

Just another quick one today because of work and life. Just trying to find my style and consistency, with a little bit of perspective practice. I did also keep iterating on my colour palette and do a bit of reading as well.

Day 18 of learning to be a better artist by drawing something every day.

Recognising that I have work and life outside of drawing, some days I won't be able to draw much. But that is OK. As long as I draw something and learn something every day 😌

Day 17 of learning to be a better artist by drawing something every day.

Today I mainly focused on trying to get better at perspective, which is by far my weakest link at the moment. But I did also start "Art Quest" as a fun way to stay focused and challenged:

Day 16 of learning to be a better artist by drawing something every day.

Today is the first time I have been disappointed in the results. Challenging myself to focus on things other than people makes me feel like I have reset to "Day 0"... but ultimately that is why it was important for me to do 😌

Day 15 of learning to be a better artist by drawing something every day.

Today I pushed myself to draw things other than faces and bodies by watching a few tutorials and diving in to trying my hand at drawing buildings and spaceships.

I did also work to keep building my understanding of arms.

Day 14 of learning to be a better artist by drawing something every day.

Still quite tired from a big week at work, so I just kept it simple again today. Practiced some basics and observability, and experimented with some different hair and clothes styles based on reference I found online.

Day 13 of learning to be a better artist by drawing something every day.

Today is the first day since I started where I didn't want to draw (exhausted from work 😴), but I also didn't want to give up. So focused on drawing one thing as fast as possible, accepting the end result might be rough.

Day 12 of learning to be a better artist by drawing something every day.

Today I tried drawing lots of different things. These are all original pieces, though to spark the imagination and get the brain going, I took inspiration from "A Monster for Every Season" by @rich-burlew.giantitp.com

Day 11 of learning to be a better artist by drawing something every day. Technically it is Day 12, but I did draw this yesterday, I was just too tired to clean it up and post.

Yesterday was a busy day, so I just went back to basics for my practice, and focused on trying to make arms look better 💪

Day 10 of learning to be a better artist by drawing every day.

Had a lazy Sunday today, and just filled in the empty panels from yesterday's page with one new original character and one referenced character (Glimmer from She-Ra).

Day 9 of learning to be a better artist by drawing something every day.

My focus today was on trying to be more efficient. I had hoped to get five pieces done in a few hours, but only managed to get three done. But that is OK, will fill the page tomorrow, and I did learn a lot in the process 🙂

Day 8 of learning to be a better artist by drawing something every day for a year.

I didn't actually do a great deal of drawing today, but I did do a lot of reading about colour, and ended up creating my own colour palette that I can use in my art going forward.

Twitter is a mess, and I am not really "feeling" Threads, so I am going to try out Bluesky for a while, in the hopes of connecting to other artists — particularly other beginner artists like myself.
