I think a lot of industries deal with this idea of putting down people without formal training, but it is really misguided. It comes off as gatekeeping and paternalistic.

For me, I think everything my arts university tries to handle around “real world” stuff tends to skew to outdated. Not only in terms of just not being updated (requiring a visume?!) but also in relation to attitudes (putting down cosplay).

When we all graduated, it was the folks who had varied skills that could get consistent work. I was so thankful my “multi-media” skills helped me get newsroom jobs, but that was really based on skills I acquired outside of class.

My first time in college there was a lot of superiority about understanding the news industry… from older men who hadn’t worked in a newsroom in far too long. (Or maybe it was good they were out of newsrooms, but they shouldn’t have been in classrooms either.)

Really disheartened by a lot of things at school right now. From the way cosplay is looked down on so much to the fact that WE HAD NO WORKING FIRE ALARM LAST WEEK APPARENTLY?

I just don’t know if I have it in me to finish this MFA. 😭
