Sci-fi, fantasy, paleontology, and theology nerd. Fan of Bonhoeffer, not Metaxas. Feminist, Lutheran. He/Him
The joy of discovering a new favorite author is amazing. I am gobbling up works by K.J. Parker right now. Just an incredibly witty fantasy author in that dark humor vein.

Finished the short story "Strays" by @scottwilliamcarter.com in the Sept/Oct issue of @asimovssfmag.bsky.social. The premise is a husband/wife team are traveling through space hunting down and disabling missiles drifting from a long ago war. It's a searing, emotional story. 10/10

Today I learned about Stephenson 2-18, possibly the largest observed star, which could fit 5-10 billion of our suns into itself. Its photosphere would possibly reach the asteroid belt. Our universe is so big.

Rereading “Embers of War” by @garethlpowell.bsky.social. It is an excellent military SF/space opera story that has stuck with me since I first read it. And it’s time to reread and read the sequels.

Finished *Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow* for the local book club. It was absolutely phenomenal. The art, the storytelling technique, the main characters—all 10/10. this is a new favorite graphic novel. Not -the- favorite, but among them.

Book haul. Starting to build up my physical collection of classic sci-fi. Always trying to add Bonhoeffer books. A WW2 book I enjoyed recently. And Chernow’s magnificent Twain biography.

Just finished the introduction to this book and I think it’s going to be incredibly interesting to read. Definitely curious about where he draws the lines and the interplay between modernism and Christianity.

“Christianity stands or falls with its revolutionary protest against violence, arbitrariness and pride of power, and with is apologia for the weak.” -Dietrich Bonhoeffer, DBWE13:402

Bonhoeffer was writing against the Nietzschean attitude of decrying Christianity due to its preference for the weak.

@nytpitchbot.bsky.social literally saw this first thing. Can’t make this stuff up.

I’d be really happy with this as the first 4 picks of the Bears in the draft. Campbell seems to fall somewhat more infrequently than Jeanty. IMO we should draft either of they are there or try to trade down to get more picks. I am not mad about being in a spot to draft the best available though.

Finished *Grave Empire* by @richardswanauthor.bsky.social. It was absolutely fantastic. A combination of dark fantasy, horror, and adventure, the story developed well throughout the book. At no point in 500 pages did the pacing seem off. I have have my first book for my 2026 Hugo ballot.

Prologue: “To me, the German Christian movement embodies a moral and spiritual dilemma I associate with my own religious questions: What is the value of religion, and in particular of Christianity, if it provides no defense against brutality and even can become a willing participant in genocide.”

So excited to have in hand *Grave Empire* by Richard Swan. His Empire of the Wolf trilogy is fantastic and should be on your Hugo ballot for best series! This one is a new series in the same world some couple hundred years later. I’ll be burning pages on this one. @richardswanauthor.bsky.social

Current reading: “The Cross of Reality: Luther’s Theologia Crucis and Bonhoeffer’s Theology” by H. Gaylon Barker. A primary thesis is that Bonhoeffer hasn’t been considered enough in light of his adherence to Luther’s theology. I tend to agree.

Book mail. I read “Orphanage” and the first 2 of its sequels Buettner years ago and enjoyed them. Finally got them all so I can finish the series. It’s military sci-fi with humor and grit. #BookSky #scifi #scifibooks
