Who gets to define Bach ?

Is classical music a birthright of the elite—or a universal language awaiting rediscovery by those clinging to hope?

In my classes, I use mock trials and stories as tools for legal education.

"Who Owns Todai ( #UTokyo )?" is not just a novel to read and close, but also a text we use to reexamine admissions systems and meritocracy --and to argue, agree, and disagree together.

In Japan, the sense of belonging to the middle class creates a sense of relief & comfort. The word “poverty” could conjure up an image of a bone-thin orphan crying out of hunger in a far-off land across the sea. To many, poverty feels a world away.

Poverty is among us nonetheless.

“What do we really mean by ‘fair’—and fair for whom?”

Entrance exams, admissions systems, personal responsibility, meritocracy.
These are big, heavy words,
but I want to begin from individual lives,
through the language of story—here at #UTokyo

Elite schools and “ordinary” ones.
Inside and outside #UTokyo Red Gate.

It’s a story that reexamines
the many lines and gaps around a single university,
through an imaginary trial and long, unfinished conversations.

Drawing on parallels between Harvard’s holistic admissions and #UTokyo (below)’s exam-driven gatekeeping, I invite readers to consider how both systems, though outwardly distinct, conceal networks of inherited advantage and quietly redefine the meaning of merit.

Merit, they say, is the great equalizer. But it whispers in accents of privilege, and wears shoes bought by someone else.

A Violinist in a Hand-Me-Down Uniform:

He never raised his hand when his youth orchestra conductor asked,
"Who's been to Vienna?"

But when he plays Schubert, it doesn't matter.
His fingers carry their own passport.

A Quiet Rebellion

What if we redefined “merit”?
Not as test scores or school names,
but as courage, creativity, and care.

Harvard, Princeton and #UTokyo (here) might still stand tall—
but the gates would look different.
