Ooh dear. Just about exactly what I didn't want to hear.

As with much about the show over the past two years, Space Babies ruined EVERYTHING.

I think the episodes themselves aren't damaged by it (it'll take more than that to meaningfully knock, say, Dot and Bubble), but the era as a whole suffers for it - something that the Tennant specials dodge by playing the hits with The Star Beast before going stranger.

There's a balance to be struck (I'd probably argue that the Gatwa era would have benefitted from a bit more landing on a planet and having an adventure), but a Doctor Who diet that chucks out Heaven Sent in favour of more of the same is surely deeply deficient.

I've got myself in a comfy little rut with my Reaper Crest build, I'm struggling to surmount some of the Act 3 bosses with it, and the higher DPS Wanderer builds feel awful in comparison. Halp.

There's a similar gag in A Matter of Loaf and Death which doesn't mention Lancashire at all, which makes it clearer that Yorkshire is the butt of the joke rather than the setting, I suppose?

Signs normally tell you places that you're entering, not places that you're on your way out of.

If we're going to be pedants, let's be pedants - it's Wigan!

Point of order!

In the annals of stuff that is Officially My Nonsense, this is high up on the list. Can't wait to dig in!

*badge, d'oh.

I liked Doctor Who's take on it, with the wielder's faith having the effect, not the object itself - a cross in the hands of a nonbeliever being useless, but a hammer and sickle budget wielded by a staunch communist doing the trick.
November 18, 2025 at 1:00 PM
I like lots of Gatwa's episodes, but the Tennant Specials are such a tight, cohesive unit with such a clear view of what they want Doctor Who to be that they leave them in the shade, really.

Homer head box set or don't bother. Boxes with consistent straight edges are for the weak.

Where has it been confirmed though? I've not seen anyone saying it apart from you - sorry if I've missed anything.

Also, Davies doesn't unilaterally control the Christmas schedules. If the spinoff does hit Christmas Day, it says more about how bare the Beeb's cupboards are than they were last year.

Have I missed something? I've seen December mentioned, but not Christmas Day.

Nothing's ever new - this all feels a lot like the tenor of the fandom after Last of the Time Lords back in the day (only at a higher intensity, as it looked like the show might die after it). Doesn't take much to turn it all around.

A cavalcade of middle-aged fans declaring that the answer to the show's ills is to make it expressly for them? Must be a Tuesday.
October 28, 2025 at 5:43 PM
I imagine that it's more along the lines of them genuinely not knowing if they'll be keeping on - if they're talking to other parties who might want a slice of the pie but want a clean break from the past, they don't want to go into those negotiations having already signed Davies and co up.

Is the Vlinx really that spenny? It's an immobile monster costume that's appeared in half a dozen stories - that's substantially less profligate than, say, the Moxx of Balhoon.

On the assumption that the BBC aren't going to do it in-house, there really isn't anyone better-placed to do it
October 28, 2025 at 5:30 PM
If I had to put a single pin in where the past two years went off the rails, it's that - the companion doesn't remotely feel grounded any more. Davies subbing out a grotty South London council estate for a lovely Notting Hill flat (played by a lovelier Clifton terrace) was him giving up the dream.
October 28, 2025 at 4:54 PM
It's a decent question, and I think the actual answer is that Doctor Who hasn't been a cheap show for nearly forty years by this point - pining towards an aesthetic that's twice as old as the target audience might not actually be to the show's benefit.

Can we lose the Big UNIT Set and keep Lux and the fun puppetry, do you reckon?
October 28, 2025 at 4:45 PM
I'm always really cautious about fetishising the old "bubble wrap and cardboard" stuff, because the people who did that were often geniuses who could have made truly incredible stuff had they received the support and budget they deserved.
