Wrapping up an exciting Dagstuhl Seminar on "RAG – The Future of Search?". I gave a talk about the threat of AI persuasion to censor and manipulate public opinion. We must be intentional to ensure these technologies liberate us, not manipulate us.

The pushback against AI should be contextualized as a strategic boycott opposing Big Tech & Silicon Valley's push to disempower the working class and their complicity in global rise in authoritarianism. If AI is the digital picket line, how do we practice care and empathy in building this movement?

This year, we do not set separate submission tracks for #IR4Good full and short papers. All submissions must be between 6 to 12 pages in length plus additional pages for references. Paper lengths should be commensurate with its contribution.
8/
August 25, 2025 at 9:10 PM
The CFP includes several example cases to illustrate the kind of critical reflections we want to encourage authors and reviewers to engage in when claiming societal impact.
7/
August 25, 2025 at 9:10 PM
Authors should critically engage with these questions, not just as an afterthought. Do not inflate your claims of societal impact, instead rigorously deliberate on your sociotechnical assumptions and potential negative externalities.
6/
August 25, 2025 at 9:10 PM
To ensure desired societal impact, this year we require all submissions that propose new tools, methods, datasets, and interventions to explicitly and rigorously argue how the work contributes towards positive social outcomes. Position papers and critiques are exempted.
5/
August 25, 2025 at 9:10 PM
Topics of interest for the #IR4Good track include how IR research and practices can contribute towards realizing more equitable, emancipatory, and sustainable collective futures.
4/
August 25, 2025 at 9:10 PM
We invite contributions that explore new positions, critiques, tools, methods, datasets, and interventions for IR-for-Good. We also welcome IR contributions informed by interdisciplinary perspectives, e.g., information sciences, HCI, STS, law, political sciences, etc.

💯 The goal of AI hype *is* to provide political cover for further defunding of our healthcare and education systems while diverting capital to big tech. #LetThemEatChatbots

This work is difficult. It requires reconciling collective risks with individual circumstances. We must resist Big Tech's attempts at prying open the cracks in our solidarity to claim AI-shaming is ableist or classist.

August 4, 2025 at 2:53 PM
This work must be grounded in movement building and our emancipatory praxis.
13/
August 4, 2025 at 2:53 PM
To resist, we must both radically reimagine our possible futures and learn from movements from our past.
12/
August 4, 2025 at 2:53 PM
And, the environmental impacts of global data center expansion for AI are also being felt disproportionately by already marginalized and vulnerable working class communities.
11/
August 4, 2025 at 2:53 PM
Beyond the commodification and appropriation of labor, AI is also providing political cover for ongoing dismantling of social services globally.
10/
August 4, 2025 at 2:53 PM
AI models do not just appropriate our labor, but also our identities.
9/
August 4, 2025 at 2:53 PM
Who gets to benefit from “AI”? And who is delegated to the role of providing data labor? The answers mirror racial capitalism and coloniality, and reinforce the global north and south divide.
8/
August 4, 2025 at 2:53 PM
It is particularly harmful that these AI tech that displaces workers/artists and commodifies their labor are built on theft and appropriation of data labor from the same workers and artists.
