Epitaph plaque with 10 lines of text on the "recto" and one line of text on the "verso." One of 14 plaques commemorating Park Eun (1479-1504), a celebrated poet. The commemoration was written by a friend of the poet, Yi Haeng, four years after the poet's death. The calligraphy is by Yi Yeongwon. Epitaph plaques serve as memorials for the individuals with whom they were buried. They typically recount the career and ancestry of the subject, and were occasionally disinterred and replaced with updated versions. Most epitaph plaques were written in underglaze cobalt blue. This set is unusual because it is writen in underglaze iron red. The text is written in Korean in Chinese characters.

Japanese title: Sōma Yoshikado kodera no zu相馬良門古寺之図 Triptych. Scene from a Kabuki ghost play depicting a samurai seated in left panel, a woman standing over a tansu opened to reveal an apparition in the center panel, and a man to right in the right panel. Yoshikado is 12th century (Heian) hero, the son of the traitor general Masakado of the Heike clan, who was beheaded after an attempt to seize power. Yasha-hime is his sister, the witch princess Takiyasha, who developed magical powers (with the help of a magic toad) in attempt to assist brother in revenging her father's killing. Story told in several Kabuki plays, including Masakado, but this image isn't an illustration of that play. Condition: Good. Inside Akiba Shrine, Ukeji, No. 91 from One Hundred Famous Views of Edo https://www.brooklynmuseum.org/opencollection/objects/121705
The fire god of Akiba Shrine, located in the village of Ukeji, east of the Sumida River, was very popular among the wives and ladies-in-waiting of the daimyo estates of Edo for protection against fire. Within the shrine grounds are many green pines and vermillion maples, particularly beautiful in the late autumn. In the water reflection the green of the pines becomes yellowish and the red of the maples is softened to a light pink. This is the only print in the series in which the brilliant autumn colors are fully enjoyed; the red pigment used here is different from the red lead which blackened in prints 88 and 94. The author has proposed that the figure of the priest seated in the teahouse in the lower left, sketching the autumn foliage, may very well be Hiroshige himself. He became a lay priest in the Third Month of 1856, at the age of sixty, just at the time this series began to appear. In 1882, twenty-five years after the artist's death, a stone memorial was erected here by Hiroshige III, the last in the direct Hiroshige line, which was engraved with the artist's parting verse and a small image of the artist in priest's robes inscribing a poem. The memorial was destroyed in the great earthquake of 1923.
