Two weeks till I do a talk about starting a LAN party group in modern times. It's gonna be very little about LAN technicalities and nearly all 'Why PC gaming in person is awesome, we let broadband and voice chat kill it, and what it takes to convince people to bring their PCs to your basement'.

There are reasons my LAN parties operate one exactly three rules:
1) Consume legal substances responsibly.
2) Don't be a jerk.
3) Absolutely don't make Ashley further define rule #2.

I spent an excessive number of years moderating a gaming forum and I learned a great deal about community spaces and cultivation, whether I wanted to or not. I have critical advice for anyone who runs a game store or gaming convention. Please share this thread with people who run those things.

I would like to again point out that the Quake 3 server running in a docker from my basement still works 27 years later and you can play on it right now.

Anthem servers are shutting down on January 12, 2026 at which time the game will no longer be playable.

I would like to again point out that the Quake 3 server running in a docker from my basement still works 27 years later and you can play on it right now.

Transport Tycoon and by extension, OpenTTD. That said I can only play OpenTTD by importing the original TTD graphical assets and not the 'OpenGFX' they use now.
