Oh yeah, Urchin being an outside does come into play in one way in this story: How the villains see him.

Gleaner sucks and pretty much always sucks, she never improves as a character
December 4, 2025 at 7:25 AM
the heirloom Janna Mattia covers don't have a cape on him, but those covers were originally made for the audiobooks
December 4, 2025 at 7:21 AM
Because Urchin is not red, he's a pale sandy color except on the tips of his ears and tail, the red for squirrels doesn't look good on him. He wears a green cape instead, which I believe is the hedgehog color.

The original book cover has the red cape, while the Rayyan one has green!

I would forgot all the color coordination they do in this series. So, all the animals have colors dedicated to them, and even more so when they're in court and have to wear robes and cloaks and mantles. Squirrels wear red, typically, because the squirrels of Mistmantle are red.

Thripple is described as lopsided and even ugly, but she's a very kind and sweet character so NO ONE ever says anything about how she looks and no one ever doubts her cause of her appearance

I FORGOT I'm gonna make a counter to see how many times Padra and Arran are asked by their friends to get married because it happens so often and they each have an excuse for not asking and the payoff is SO CUTE

"Just marry her already" Counter is at 1
December 4, 2025 at 7:11 AM
the Threadings are supposed to tell the story of Mistmantle's history but Husk is using them for propaganda, like any good usurping little bastard would
December 3, 2025 at 6:21 PM
And then we get a short snippet of Crispin arriving on Swan Isle and nearly getting eviscerated by Lord Arcneck. And we get the first of very few moments with Crispin's wife
December 3, 2025 at 6:17 PM
there is a "fencing master" that teaches Urchin how to use a sword but we do not ever get to see a single lesson or even learn who the fencing master is
December 3, 2025 at 6:10 PM
I DO NOT KNOW why for Granite's introduction they had him fondle Urchin's face
December 3, 2025 at 7:38 AM
he remembers that Urchin is named after a thing from the sea but not exactly what lol
December 3, 2025 at 7:35 AM
Brushen, cause he's drunk I imagine, calls Urchin a "foreigner." It's funny, the book tries to make a big deal about this and Urchin has anxiety about it but it never really comes up. He's never doubted or made fun of for it. Brushen then calls Urchin "Shell or Starfish" because–
December 3, 2025 at 7:35 AM
the fact that Husk's plan to deal with the king was just to keep him drunk and depressed and nobody could catch on cause he was in charge of everything is. Hysterical.
December 3, 2025 at 7:33 AM
Fir: "Let him finish his drink."
Padra, immediately: "I want you to go see the king!"
Urchin: *spits out his drink*
December 3, 2025 at 7:29 AM
Urchin apparently knocks on doors on so specific a way that he can be identified just by the way he does it
December 3, 2025 at 7:24 AM
One very funny thing about Padra taking Urchin as his page is that he teaches Urchin to cook fish, but Urchin DOES NOT like eating fish lol
December 3, 2025 at 7:20 AM
Since squirrels obviously don't fly, he takes this to mean he has nothing to fear and starts acting accordingly. And thus, Mistmantle 1 is "an enemy among us" story
December 3, 2025 at 4:35 AM
I don't know how well planned this was but Husk's "first murder" isn't really a plot point but it is implied to be SOMEONE a few books later, which does affect one character a lot. The dark room also gives him a prophecy, somehow, about fearing the day that squirrels fly
December 3, 2025 at 4:34 AM
just one of those things that reminds you that this is technically a Christian fantasy book
December 3, 2025 at 4:29 AM
this chamber is weird for me because Husk had been friends with Crispin and Padra since they were kids and it's implied him finding this abandoned chamber where horrible things had been done is the reason he turned evil. Later Fir has to pray in the room constantly to cleanse it
December 3, 2025 at 4:29 AM
And then, when the reader was suspecting nothing (or if they were smarter than I am they were suspecting at least a little), the book reveals to us that Husk is very much evil and is a no good very bad guy that is up to Some Bullshit
December 3, 2025 at 4:28 AM
And then when Crispin leaves, Padra takes on Urchin as his page! The relationship between Padra and Urchin is lovely. Padra basically becomes Urchin's dad and is one of the reasons he was my favorite character for this book. And I love that this relationship is extended with Corr later

Lugg! Lugg's great, moles in Mistmantle are so fun
